two2homeschool
what would you spend it on? My kids are 9 and 8yrs and my husband just got a gift certificate at a bookstore that can order just about anything in for us. What do you think? I was considering Teaching the Classics because otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford it, but I am not sure. Any ideas? What did you really like, and might seems like an extra but really helped out in you homeschool? PS- My kids don't like Rosetta Stone-so that is out. Thanks so much
Sew happily ever after
Well that was my entire curriculum budget for this next school year, which sufficiently covered all the basics that we need, so if I had an extra $500 I'd probably go crazy and buy the books that go to a core or 2 from Sonlight. Or I'd just go browse and let the kids pick books that look pretty fun to them! Wow! What a blessing...hope you have fun spending that! Can the bookstore order DVD's or music? You might check into educational DVD's or music. Enjoy!

Guest Lisa Anne
I really liked Sonlight when I was homeschooling. I would buy it used and save money and then when we were done I could sell it for about the same price I paid for it used. So, no money was lost . And it is a wonderful education! elegantlion
First I would look at what reference books you'd like to have to use for more than one year. Dictionary, subject specific encyclopedias, and thesaurus. I'd also look at any educational books you'd like for yourself. It's so easy to spend money on the dc and neglect our own self-education as you get on a roll buying curriculum. I would also buy some classical music CDs and books on audio CD. I'd throw in some fun titles too. Maybe buy the series for a set of books you might want to keep. Have fun with your order. Let us know what you get so we can live vicariously through you. :D:D

Thanks so much If I were in your shoes I'd spend a good portion of that money on building my home library. :D I've been going through the Veritas Press catalog and picking out books for each grade level to correspond with our history studies. They recommend some real gems that dd and I have both thoroughly enjoyed. :) Most of the books are not available from my library so I've been trying to buy them bit by bit when I can. I'd also get some living books to go along with our science studies- check out NOEO for some good selections. I'd consider purchasing the Apologia Exploring Creation series, just to have sitting around for dd to pick up and read.- she does this currently so I know for *us* it would not be a waste of money. I can't comment on Teaching the Classics since I own it but haven't even opened the DVD. I'm glad I do have it and I'm sure I'll use it soon. Other resources to consider are: Living Memory by Drew Campbell Latin Centered Curriculum by Drew Campbell The Well Trained Mind :D (I've been using the library copy for years and am drooling over having my very own on my bookshelf) IEW Artistic Pursuits or Atelier art supplies science kits

two2homeschool
I decided to order Teaching the Classics-even though I don't really need it quite yet. But I'm sure it will take me a while before I fully comprehend it! I don't remember dissecting books in ps but I am sure looking forward to it in hschoolong. So I went thru the Sonlight guide and I am ordering some that I will need for Core 3 and 4( I am hoping to get most used so I didn't get too many). Plus, a really good atlas, the Story of Canada, Joy Hakim's History of US as well as The Story of Science (book 1-3). That's it- taxes will take up a good chunk in itself! Thanks gals! HiddenJewel
I would buy an e-book reader for starters.

PeterPan
You don't need Hakim just yet and you can get it used. You might look for the Childhood of Famous Americans series (COFA's). They're WONDERFUL, and your dc are both of an age to enjoy them. There are about 60 in print they could get for you. They're something your dc would read over and over. I agree with the others about going slowly and not letting it burn a hole in your pocket. :) I'd suggest buying *1* each of some of the things you're considering, then you can buy more if your dc turn out to like them. Something like Hakim you can get for half the price used, so it doesn't make sense to buy it new.
Julie in Monterey
How wonderful! We really enjoy Hakim's series. My 8 y/o loves them. I would also consider the Planet Earth DVD set. Our whole family enjoys them and the kids learn something new each time they watch them. Julie in Monterey
Pat in MI
A talking dictionary would be my pick. I never seem to have enough left over for one of these, but it sure would come in handy as our reading gets a little tougher each year. Have fun with your spending! Blessings, Pat
