MommyInTraining
I am thinking about using All American Set 1. I know about getting the books from the library or buying them used, but the student activity pack at $59 each for 3 children is breaking the bank. I do have some curriculum I could sell if I take the time to do it. Any other ideas? Is there much expense involved in craft supplies? Thanks so much! razorbackmama
I bought the Time Traveler's CDs from Homeschool in the Woods for $28.95 apiece and will print off what I need from them. I will be using AA1 with 4 children next year.
MommyInTraining
Razorback, what are you using right now for history? What are the ages of your children again? Mine are 10, 7, 5, 3, 1 and possibly more coming soon....

I just thought it would be easier to by the student pack from WP with the stuff already printed. Are you concerned about having time to print things out? Mine are 10, 7, 5, 3, 1 and possibly more coming soon.... We are using Diana Waring's History Revealed. The main crux of it is geared toward older students, but they do have an elementary activity book, and that mostly what we do. We listen to the CDs and read some of the recommended reading books that she lists as well (whatever I can find at the library). *IF* her materials covered American history in-depth I would just continue to use them. But alas, they don't, so that is why I'll use WP AA1 when we get to that point in history. My kids are almost 12, 10.5, 8.5, almost 7, 4, and 20 months. I'm not sure how much the CDs are from WP (I was buying some other stuff from HITW, so I just bought it all at once LOL). I decided to do that so that I could just print what I wanted rather than possibly paying for something that I end up not using (if we don't do a particular project or whatever). No, printing things really isn't a huge concern of mine - I print so much stuff anyway that it's not that big of a deal. I'll look at it though and see if I can print things up ahead of time, just to save on some of the day-to-day printing.
PeterPan
Terri, don't buy the student pack for all 4 of your kids. Buy *1* student pack, use that for your oldest, and then print off from the cd's the occasional page you decide to use for your youngers. What does AA expect the youngers to use? Aren't there hands-on things from AS that they've put into the AA set, some kind of coloring pages or age-appropriate notebooking pages or something? Are 7 yo and 5 yo just need to color. The TT student pages are more sophisticated, cool stuff that your 10 will enjoy. I haven't looked at AA closely enough to know, but I assume they have a plan for what the youngers color or craft each day and that it's NOT the upper level TT pages. Even if it is (which I doubt), I still wouldn't buy the whole pack for them, because they're not going to use it. Just run the specific pages you want as you get to them. But yes, having the pack for your 10 yo will be a huge help and make it easier to get started.
PeterPan
My printer must be slower than Razor's. It takes a lot of time per page to print things, and I'm very glad I bought the pack! When you buy all 4 of the cd's from WP, they throw in the printed text, which is a good deal too! Buy the pre-printed stuff and you'll be glad, honest. :)
SnowWhite
I think OhElizabeth's advice is right on track. I'd never buy Student Activity packs for Time Travelers for a 5 and 7yo. WP's set *includes* them in digital format (AND the printed text), so for those few times they pitch a fit and MUST do what the 10yo is doing, you can print them out. I *would* buy one student activity pack for the 10yo though so it will be mostly open and go. I'd also not buy each of them a State Study or Christian Character study. Let 'em all share one set. I probably wouldn't buy the Old World Style maps set either. I'm betting there are maps in the TT set (right, OE?) If you're worried there won't be enough to keep the little 5yo and 7yo hands busy while you read aloud or something, (there's like one 3D Interactive Map scheduled per week, already) it would be really easy to add the Indian Tribes of North America Dover coloring book for them and/or Colonial America (paper crafts), which are included in AS1 but not in AA1. I like to have everything in front of me and at least with one in printed text you can see what's ahead. Also can decide what crafts you want to do. One thing to remember is you don't have to do everything. They give you lots of crafts for you to pick & choose. Not to do it all. My dc really enjoyed WP. They loved the books. Anyway, I would go with one printed text, same with the Plains Indian & Teepee Village. I purchased one per child but we only used one. PeterPan
If you need to save money, I'd ditch the extras like the character study, art study, and even the geography. Keep the geography if you can, but the others we aren't doing and aren't missing.
