JaneNickerson
We have an assignment to find out the meaning and historical significance of each of the provincial capitals. I know Victoria is named after Queen Victoria. Does anyone know the rest? :) One down, twelve to go.

Alana in Canada
hey, hey, I'm actually out west, but I love a party! Do you know that in a spirit of cooperation between the Spanish and the English, Cpt. Vancouver named Vancouver Island "Vancouver's and Quadra's Island"? Victoria--presumably after HRH. Now, I think the rest is right--but I wouldn't swear to it--do cross check it, OK? Let's see, Edmonton was named for the home estate of some HBC guy, Regina--obviously after some queen or other, but I forget which one. Winnipeg--no clue, something aboriginal, Queen Victoria actually changed the name of "Bytown" (after Colonol By who built the Rideau canal) to Ottawa--after the river (whch was named after the tribe) (oops, not a provincial capital!) Toronto was orginally named "York" but it didn't stick--the Natives and locals called it "Toronto" and so it was.... Quebec-- from kebec, "Where the River Narrows". An Algonquian word? Saint John and St. John's were both founded on the feast day for John the Baptist Fredricton--Frederick Town--but who was Fred? Halifax was indeed the title of Lord Halifax. He was on the British Board of Trade and his real name was George Dunk! Just think: it could have been "Dunkville"!! or Chebucto--what the Mi'kmaq called the harbour. It was built by the English as a response to having handed Fort Louisbourg back to the French in 1748. Cornwallis moved the capital from Annapolis Royal to Halifax. But you all knew all that, didn't you? Charlottetown--wasn't there a queen or princess? (There are the Queen Charlotte Islands, in the West, too) Yellowknife--local tribe Iqualuit (can't even spell it--it is from an Inuit word. I forget what the meaning is, though) Whitehorse--no clue, but you'd think there'd be an interesting story, wouldn't you? YHZNS
YHZNS - Are you near the airport? I'm guessing because of the name. :) I'm only 20 mins away myself. I know, I know, who picks a username after an airport code? There are so many Rebeccas on boards I tried to pick a username that was unique. It was the first thing that popped into my head. Both of my girls are named after important literary figures. They even came up with their own names for the board (see signature) but I pick an airport code. ;) p.s. I am about 25-30 minutes from the airport.
dawn of ns
We're gonna have to have some kind of WTM get together at some point over the summer. I'm moving in my new house Friday and it has a fish pond and a nice deck for BBQing!
Colleen in NS
I know, I know, who picks a username after an airport code? I probably shouldn't have  - I'm sorry! I like your username - it's catchy and memorable (memorable to Maritimers, airline personnel, and frequent travelers). Seriously, it's very clever. I couldn't think of anything clever for my username, but maybe it's somewhat clever because I've had people on the boards ask me what NS stood for. Alana, interesting list! I used to live in Ottawa, but I forgot it was called Bytown after that guy. (Did anyone see that Obama made a detour to the Byward Market last week?) JaneNickerson
Hey there all you Canadians. :) Thanks for coming to my party! I found some info on Wikipedia. fivetails
Hey there all you Canadians. :)Thanks for coming to my party! I found some info on Wikipedia. Which leads to my next question... How reliable is Wikipedia? eh...I know there are some who would scream about using it, but most of the time I find it pretty good. There *are* people who vandalize it, throw in incorrect info, stuff like that - but that's usually caught pretty fast and fixed.... :)
