Frontier Mom
What Biology do you like? We have been doing Apologia and like it but wondered if there were others out there.
Frontier Mom
any suggestions or comments?
Ria
You could search this board for biology recommendations. There are those of us on the boards who consider Apologia to be much less rigorous than other courses, and there are those who are happy with it. Your choice.... Jane in NC
There is also a "biology" tag in the Tag Cloud on the forum list page. Clicking on threads with the tag will lead you to some good discussions and helpful hints. We used Campbell. Jane
momof2boys
My youngest son is doing apologia Biology this year. He wants to get a biology degree and lets just say that I have had to add a lot of stuff to the Apologia to make it a rigorous Biology program. My son is not that impressed with apologia and quite frankly neither am I. Just our experience. gloria

FloridaLisa
Have you used Apologia before? We've used many of their books. I like Apologia's biology; I'm happy with the experiments and find it very manageable. I facilitated the labs several years ago and put together a lab class this year. I would consider it sufficient for any non-science major and an introductory course for a science major. Be aware that it does not cover anatomy and physiology and that Apologia has a separate course for that. My oldest ds, who will likely pursue science in college, took Apologia in 8th and went on to AP Bio in 10th. My dd, probably not a science major, is taking Apologia bio in 9th and will still have time for an AP in 12th or a college science such as A & P. My next ds is taking Apologia bio in 8th and will follow a path similar to ds1. I like starting my dc out with a science course from a creation worldview. They will have lots of classes using secular texts in their life! HTH, Lisa

I remeber hearing here a while back that there was a Biology course some felt was superior to Aplogia but I wasn't able to search for it successfully here on the boards. I appreciate your help. Where did your son take an AP Biology class as I am just now looking into those options for further down the road? I have been checking out sites like hslda and others. MamaT
We use Apologia and are happy with it. My 9th grade son is using it now, and his two older brothers used it as well. My two older went on to fly through their college science/lab courses after a high school Apologia sequence of Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Biology, and finally a cc course as seniors. Kareni
Is there a way to do high school science without textbooks? Kelley, Short answer: yes. Here's a thread on a similar topic: If anyone has created their own science curriculum - would you be willing to share? If you read it and follow the links to other posts within it, I think you'll get plenty of ideas. Regards, Kareni

OK. I did order this very cheaply on ebay. Do I need anything besides the student book? Thanks so much for your suggestion. I also ordered an inexpensive Campbell Biology as well. Oh, well, whichever I like I will use and keep the other for extras or for the next three dc's coming along.
4wildberrys
Just wanted to add that we dropped Apologia Bio after 10 weeks---yuck! So NOT our style---not visual enough, too wordy. In fact, Apologia period is just not a good fit for us. It created a science hater out of my daughter---twice now! (physical and now bio). We shelved it and are doing Earth science until I can figure out a better program for her next year.
Lolly
My dd's are using BJU for biology. It has been an excellent fit here.
Michelle in AL
If you decide to go with a Campbells or Prentice Hall I would highly recommend getting the TM. It'll have all the answers to the Ch reviews and such. Some TM's have excellent assignment suggestions and points to stress in them that I appreciate having. I usually find TMs the cheapest on abebooks. I would also get a study guide if one is available and a lab manual if there aren't any labs in the text. The lab manual doesn't necessarily need to be the one that goes with the text. You could get a homeschool one and correlate the two.
Maura in NY
I second the Prentice-Hall Biology (aka the Dragonfly book). We used this for 9th grade, and my son did very well on the SAT II. It's comprehensive, interesting, and very usable. We also used the Study Guide and Lab Book, although I will add that most of the labs we did came from other sources.
