Homeschooling in AZ

Recommended Posts

My husband has been out of work for a while. We currently live in New England. He is sending resumes out to FL and AZ.

I know about FL and their HS laws, climate and areas.

But I know nothing about AZ.

I hate the cold and the winters so it being hot is fine with me. He has send out resumes to the following AZ cities/towns: Phoenix, Page, Coolidge,Yuma and Parker.

Can anyone tell me about any of those cities? Housing? Climate? Crime?

And how are the HS laws in AZ?

Thank you:001_smile:

We are in Prescott but lived in the Valley for over 5 years. The hs laws are the best! All we had to do was send in an affidavit of intent to homeschool, copy of birth certificate and that was it! No testing or anything required!

I don't know anything about the other cities but Phx has a huge selection of housing. As for hot...well, Phx will redefine "hot" for you as will Yuma. It's more like blistering, feel like you just walked into an oven, take your breath away hot. But it is a dry heat which does make a difference...kind of. Right now the weather is beautiful and makes the summers almost worth it.

Crime I must say is bad from personal experience. The very first day my dh was at his job back in 1998 the battery was stolen out of his car, his bike was stolen, our van was "tossed" for no apparent reason. We were lucky and never had our house broken into. Not every neighborhood or area will be that way but we lived in a decent area and still had it happen.

The best thing about the Valley is the incredible network of homeschoolers. For example there is a guy who's job is to coach homeschool P.E. groups. He goes all over the Valley, charges a very reasonable rate and has a first-rate program. I really miss the support groups down there...but don't miss the weather! ;)

We live in a western suburb of Phoenix. Phoenix is absolutely huge. According to the news last year, Phoenix is now the 5th largest city in the U.S. Bigger than Detroit, bigger than Dallas. I had no idea until we moved here. The crime doesn't seem too bad over in our area although one of our neighbors had his bike stolen recently. I'd say the crime rate is higher than back in the Portland, OR, area where we moved from.

As for Phoenix and Yuma redefining hot,. You really have no idea how hot feels until you've experienced it here. Although we aren't the hottest area. Bullhead City is usually hotter. Being a dry heat does make a difference. You don't sweat. It evaporates the second it forms. Very weird! You will miss the seasons I think. I know I do. It takes some adjustment. Here winter lasts about 2 weeks, around Christmas and New Year's. (It can actually drop below freezing at night!) Then it's warm until it's hot and then it gets almost unbearable and then back to simply hot.

Homeschooling here is great!

I'm in AZ. Hs laws are awesome here! Very very easy. Just affid. and birth certificate required. No testing required.

We get all four seasons here, but we're about an hour from the greater Phoenix area, (the big oven). I used to live in that oven. The crime is not too bad for a big city. It is very well laid out, easy to learn how to get around if your new,(basically a big grid). Lots of shopping, everywhere you go. However, most activities are in-doors. We are an out-doors kind of family, this is the main reason we moved to a smaller mountain area, still close enough to Phoenix, for big shopping ever so often.

Hope this helps:).
