Jean in Newcastle
Dd7 loves to sing and dance to music. I relaxed my guard and some music which really goes against our family values has been creeping into her listening repertoire. The biggest "bad" influence at the moment is Taylor Swift. I like her singing and melodies but when I actually listened to the lyrics, I don't think that much of it is appropriate for my 7 year old. Good choices that she's had in the past: The Von Trapp Children, Michael Buble, some of Carrie Underwood's stuff, some of the Disney princess type music, Take 6, Randy Travis. . . Any other suggestions for us? I don't want stuff that is sexually suggestive. She doesn't like "kiddie" music. As you notice, some of her favorites are not "girls" but she does esp. respond to "girl" role models - thus the need for me to make sure that they are wholesome girl/women role models. dcjlkplus3
Maybe music from some of the Barbie movies - very good music, and the lyrics are very non-offensive and girl-powering.
BellaMama
Charlotte Church? Very classic. Does she understand french? La Compagnie Creole is fun to listen to.
WTMindy
The Wow worship CDs are good. My dd likes those. She is 11 and asked for a Taylor Swift CD for her b-day. I'm having some of the same issues as to whether this is really what I want he to be listening to. I like some Taylor Swift songs but.....it is hard to know where to draw the line. My dd really loves musicals like Suessical the Musical, Joseph & his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, etc...
Trivium Academy
Is Christian music okay? ZoeGirl and Barlow Girl are great. I have ZoeGirl's Room to Breathe CD and *I* love it, so does my dd8. If you're looking for safe music, I would take her to a Christian store that has music and let her sample a few to see what she might like. I know LifeWay Christian Bookstores has a music section with headphones. My kids dd8 and ds4 listen to Christian music and classic rock (with me), when dd8 was asked recently about what musicians she knows she answered, "Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, but I really love Bach." LOL!! I was so glad I overheard that!
Jean in Newcastle
Great ideas! And yes, Christian artists are fine.
melissel
Would she listen to kids' music that doesn't really sound "kiddie"? My DD6 is also starting to want to listen to adult music (I'm struggling with the same issues!), but still enjoys listening to Mr. Ray, Ralph's World (At the Bottom of the Sea is terrific), They Might Be Giants' NO! CD (one of my personal faves), and Philadelphia Chickens (sort of Broadway musical style, but with hilarious twists). It's so hard at this age. I do love that Taylor Swift song (Love Story, maybe? don't know the name), but realized when it came on the radio yesterday that it wasn't exactly where I want my DD6's thoughts! We've had the best luck with DH making mix CDs from songs in our collection that he prescreens or buys on itunes to add to the CD. If you want, later I can grab a few of the CDs and write down what he's included in them. They won't be Christian-oriented, but they should be pretty safe. browneyedgirl
I went thru the same thing with my daughter and we found Barlow Girl and Zoe Girl both to be good girl bands....also look into JUMP 5.
Angel
Barlow Girl is good. I like their earlier stuff better, but dd's like it all. My older dd has cd's by Vicki Beeching. Wonderful stuff. At your dd's age she liked the WOW cd's. Younger dd likes all that plus Kutless and Casting Crowns.
TN Mama
My 7 year old daughter got the Britt Nicole cd (Christian artist - sings Set the World on Fire) for Christmas and really enjoys that. I've made cds for my daughter that include a few harmless (imo) songs on iTunes. Could you do that? Then you could include the Taylor Swift songs that you approve of without having the ones that aren't so great. Other artists/songs my daughters enjoy: Stacie Orico (More to Life), Nichole Nordeman, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, TobyMac, Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, Free to be Me by Francesca Battistelli (huge favorite for all of us!)... Lots more, but I hope this is a help.
Jean in Newcastle
A couple of you suggested putting selected songs on an Ipod - or CD. Yes, I can do that. It's just a matter of finding the time. . . !
helena
My girls 10 & 7 are marching around the living room right now to the Kit Kittredge sound tract. Great songs, and music history in one! My husband is in the music industry. It's scary out there:eek:

My husband is in the music industry. It's scary out there:eek: Yes, it really is. That's a great idea, by the way. And Chris, what about older music? The Beach Boys? The Monkees? My girls like Simon and Garfunkel, though it's been awhile since I paid attention to the lyrics. And salsa music? The lyrics may not be appropriate, but she'll never know
StaceyinLA
Carrie Underwood is appropriate and Taylor Swift isn't. Carrie Underwood has some pretty rough songs. If you are limiting the types of songs from each artist, just weed out the Taylor Swift you don't approve of. I second the idea of an iPod - shuffles are great, and cheap now. Go through the artists she likes and load what you find appropriate. Otherwise, do only the Christian music. At any rate, you will probably, at least for a few years, have to be weeding out certain songs, even from artists that are generally fine. Jackie in NE
My dd has enjoyed Pure NRG. Way too screechy for me.... but they are a Christian band and also remake some of the old classics "Aint no Mountain High Enough". We balance it out with some good classical and jazz. An aside.... sometimes I play the "Oldies" station on the radio, and I'm amazed/apalled at what we used to listen to..... Be careful with oldies! Have fun, Jackie
Jean in Newcastle
LOL! I was relistening to the Beattles the other day. I was shocked at all the drug references that I never ever got when I was growing up (and yes, I grew up with the Beattles). Stacy - you are absolutely right about having to weed out Carrie Underwood songs. In her case, a friend happened to put together a nice weeded CD for us. We do listen to many oldies - Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte, Bing Crosby, the Andrews Sisters, the Eagles, many of the doo-wop bands and some of the folk music of the 60's (though you have to weed through some of that too). We also listen to a fair amount of classical and "weird" stuff like Renaissance music and music from the Andes. If the Andean music is sexually suggestive, I would have no idea!
