samba2nite
My son who hates to write or do anything with his hands LOVES words and will stop me when we are reading and he hears a new word for the first time. He wants to know what it means and how it is spelled. I could read the dictionary to them but thought I'd rather just get them some vocabulary books to boost their love of words. Any suggestions? LindaOz
This is not a book recommendation (sorry!) but what I do is have my kids pick out words they don't know the meanings of, or vocab words from their science programs etc, look them up in the dictionary, then write the word and meaning on index cards. They then have a running pack of new words they are learning. I find this to be working well.
Lori D.
How about the Vocabulary Cartoons series? see them at: http://rainbowresource.com/search.php?sid=1235430559-975298 We used English From the Roots Up (vol 1 and vol 2) as a fun game -- looked at just the Latin or Greek root, try to think of words that had that root in it, and from that guess what the root could mean. Then we'd read the definition and about the various words formed with that root. Or, here are some online vocabulary games: Learning Vocabulary Fun = http://www.vocabulary.co.il/ Education World = http://www.educationworld.com/a_special/vocabulary Vocabulary Fun = http://www.vocabulary.com/ Enjoy your word journey!
