Hoggirl
We dropped Spelling Workout probably around Level G or so. It just felt like busywork. We did do Wordly Wise for a year and have also done Word Roots (from Critical Thinking) A1 and A2, though it has been awhile, and I am sure ds doesn't remember all of it. He is in LitCT volume II which we will carry on with next year. Wordly Wise was okay, but he didn't really like all the writing he had to do. I guess I feel like we need something that might cover vocabulary words that have word origins other than Latin, but computer-based would sure be nice. Any ideas? StaceyL in Canada
...Vocabulary for the High School Student (which we start in gr 7-8), followed by Vocab for the College-Bound Students, from Amsco. I find them more engaging than the Vocab from Classical Roots books, and I appreciate that they cover not only Greek and Latin-based vocab, but also Old English roots and borrowed words form other languages (Italian , Spanish, etc). My favourite exercise is the "Say it on four words or less" one--great for practising concise writing! I know others on the WTM boards have also used and recommend these books. Hmmm--you know, I can't recall where I bought mine! I know you can order directly from Amscopub.com online (I think that's the address). Other hs suppliers may carry it; I know Rainbow Resource did years ago, where I first saw it (though I first heard of it in a book by educator Marva Collins). Julie in MN
I'm just using the science words. 7th grade science covers a wide range of terms that are commonly used in life. Julie
razorbackmama
How funny. I came over here to ask about vocabulary for my 7th grader too! :lurk5:

newlifemom
I think it is called vocab from Greek and Latin roots? I am having a hard time remembering it had a level A and B. I loved it! Mainly b/c it showed me the teacher how to really see if a word was understood. And the girls I used it with, let's just say they were very creative and I spent many an evening openly guffawing(sp?) over their sentences and paragraphs. Janie
I second Vocab for HS Student and Vocab for CB Student. Answer keys are available also. Both are very thorough and teach words that kids need to learn to become articulate communicators. I used both with my four children and now am using Vocab HS Student for my 7th and 8th grade classes. Next year, I may include the 6th graders. We go at a pace of one word list every couple of weeks. If you go too quickly, words are not learned well. I assign one section per day (i.e. sentence completion, synonyms, etc.) and quiz the words daily. Easy peesie. Descriptions of VfHSS will say it is for grades 9-12, but I've found that this book can be efficiently taught in grades (6), 7, 8, 9, and followed by Vocab for the College Bound Student. Some of the words in the HS book are repeated in the CB book (that's okay!), but interestingly enough, Marva Collins used the CB book for her younger students. Obviously, they can do it! HTH!
