Anne of Green Gables movies...

My daughter has been sick in bed this weekend. We've enjoyed our dvd's of Anne of Green Gables 1 & 2. The second dvd isn't as faithful to the plot of the books, but it is faithful to the spirit of them. She really wants to watch the 3rd from Netflix, bc we own the first two.

I watched it once a long time ago and despised it! It was so NOT right! I told her I have to pretend it doesn't exist. :)

Now, there is a 4th movie called Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning. I had never heard about it. The trailor implies that Anne had been lying when she said she was an orphan. She is played as an older woman by Barbara Hershey and she goes in search of her father!

Kevin Sullivan is such a gifted filmmaker. Why did he have to change the books soooo much! I love the adult Anne of the books. She is an incredible mother to her young children, and a loving mother to her adult children. I re- read the series regularly bc she is so inspiring to me. There is a wealth of stories to be told from them. Imagine how good Rilla of Ingleside would be!!

I love movie 1 and 2. I HATE the last one in the original series. It is stupid beyond belief. I refuse to watch the latest re-make. That was just taking the names.

And I would love to see all the books done into movies as long as they stay faithful to them. Rilla of Ingleside is still one of my favourite books.

I'm with you in pretending the 3rd movie doesn't exist!

I think they really missed a great opportunity to portray the efforts of people who stayed behind during WW1. It's a fascinating time in history and I can't believe how Kevin Sullivan botched it up....

And Megan Followes is the best Anne. I loved Colleen Dewhurst too. Gilbert though - meh. I don't think that part was cast well.

I agree that Megan Followes was a great Anne. I would have loved to have seen a movie about the home front in ww1. I loved the book because it shows the horror of not knowing mixed with the fact that life went on even with the horrors. As you said it is a facinating time in history

eeeeewwww {shiver} The third one doesn't exist at this house either. I watched it recently and was absolutely horrified. Why take such a GREAT series and change it so much that it becomes unrecognizable? It's a crime!!

There were SO many funny moments, tender moments, learning moments in that series - and they just wadded it all up.

I think it was a big problem for the later movie that the original film had moved Anne up to be approximately an Edwardian rather than a Victorian. That puts her in the middle of WWI, and doesn't allow for a Rilla film (which I would adore). Also, it's my understanding that the Montgomery heirs would not allow Sullivan to use more actual material--thus the hideous travesty that is Anne III. It's ridiculous to have Anne giving pacifist speeches in WWI Europe. :ack2:

I don't even want to hear about this fourth movie business; it sounds too horrible to think about.

However, I'm going to stick up for Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert, 'cause I had a huge crush on him all through high school.

Oh, I disagree. I *loved* the actor who played Gilbert. IMO, he was perfectly cast for the role.

(And, I totally disagree with your quote. I would not consider myself a feminist, and that in no way pegs me as a masochist. Gloria Steinhem in no way, shape, or form represents me. Not even close.)

Ugh, I hated the third movie. I was outraged and disappointed that they went completely away from anything that was really in the books. It's so frustrating to me when movies change the story when they don't really have to for sake of condensing the story.

I haven't seen the 4th one...and don't think I will based on that synopsis.
