LNC
My 9yo daughter is entering her horse phase. Isn't that a rite of passage? I know I loved to collect Breyer horses and read Marguerite Henry novels at her age. I was thinking about starting a Breyer collection for her - mine are long gone. Do you collect the Traditional or Classic size? The Traditional are 1:9 scale, and the Classic are 1:12 scale. I have seen the Classic at Target, but I'm thinking the Traditional are what I collected. http://www.breyerhorses.com/products/ Which do you prefer? Thanks for any help. Ria
I had about 35 of the traditionals. I recently sold the lot of them...none of my kids wanted them. Ria
Happy
I collected model horses before Breyer. I have a bunch of Breyer's and others still stored. They are my most cherished childhood possession. Mine were the original size, so I'm guessing classic. I hope you'll get your daughter Breyer's to play with, not just collect. I spent many hours making up horse stories and adventures with mine. Most of mine had names, pedigrees, and their own stories. It would be a shame to have model horses and have to keep them boxed for collector purposes. I knew children who didn't get to play with their Beanie Babies because they were 'collections.' By the way, your daughter will love the Black Stallion series by Walter Farley, too. The Black Stallion, The Island Stallion--also a series, Man O'War....oh, yes, lots of good horse stories there. LNC
We play with our collections too :). Thanks for the Black Stallion rec, I don't think I read those when I was younger. I think they are recommended in Beautiful Feet's horse guide - she's going through that for a summer project.
Brigitte
The Traditional are the most "collectible." The Classics are cheaper and not really on par with the Traditional as far as collectors are concerned. However, I say get which ever ones strike your dd's fancy. Stacia
My dd has the Traditional size & loves them. She plays w/ them constantly.
Remudamom
Every size here but mostly the Traditional (BIG) ones. The smaller ones are more affordable but the others are much nicer.
Gini
My daughters started with my old traditionals plus more and a sprinkling of some classics. No question the traditionals are the ones to get for girls.
vettechmomof2
we have many sizes and now my son has the little stablemates size. My daughter has all of the Breyers that go along with the BF guide. Brighty, Misty, Justin Morgan, etc. My father built her a beautiful stable for them as well because I could not stand the price they were going for. Have fun and we only get ones that someone expresses an interest in, color, history of the animals, etc.
mamaof2andtwins
Right now, we have the Stablemates. I think the girls are up to about 40 horses plus barns, tack shop, play mat, etc. Jennie

I had lots of these as a child too. My parents probably still have them in their basement. Lots of good memories from a child stuck in suburbia. They are also great for art. I learned how to draw horses using them as my models. Perhaps I should get one, just for art purposes, right? ;)

In remembering the many stories I made up about each one, I'm quite sure I need a few more to spark my creative fiction juices. I could start a young adult novel about a girl and a wild horse....... Stacia
Also, if you have the Traditional size horses, this is a great stable (Maxim Large Stable w/ Corral) for them. My dd got this stable for Christmas & it is awesome. It is almost identical to a Breyer barn that was retired a couple of years ago. (Of course, the Breyer version was much pricier -- I think the Breyer version was in the $250 range.) I ended up finding it through Target online (for $80 w/ free shipping). I don't think the Target website has any more in stock right now, though. But, if you look around, you could probably find a good price & free shipping, I'm guessing. I went from collecting Breyers to collecting the real thing! I've got 7 living breathing equines now, with one on the way. I got horses under my skin when I was little and never got them out! I whined for years until my parents gave in and let me buy my first horse at 13. ( with my own money)
CactusPair
Breyer horses are so cool. I had several of them. After looking at the link, I think I probably had the classics. They were kind of big and I played with them a ton. None were left intact to save after my childhood because I played with them so often. I *loved* them so much. Such a happy part of girlhood.:001_smile: What a wonderful phase for you and your dd.
Unicorn.
We have both. I wouldn't stick to just traditional or classic, get whichever ones she likes. :0)
GreenKitty
I am not sure which type of Breyer horses we have but they are CHEAP. Two have broken already and the barn does NOT stay together at all. It can't be moved a 1/4 inch and it falls apart. We won't be buying more of them. Their are much better horses to be had by other companies.
