Frontier Mom
I won't be getting it until early March as per Amazon but wondering what things I can put on my wish book. What good downloads have you read?
Plucky
How much are downloads? Do you save money on books?
Big Buckin' Longhorn
When you get it, please post a review. I have been drooling over the front page of Amazon all week long. It looks like heaven. It's a little (well, a lot) cost prohibitive for us right now . . . or possibly ever. I'm lobbying for a Valentine's Day-Mother's Day-Birthday-Anniversary-Christmas gift all rolled up into one! ;)

I am only justifying this with the fact that I live at the baseball & softball field in the spring and summer and want to download many books to be reading there. I also got the leather cover. I'm hoping it is all it is billed as but, I think it just looks wonderful. The selling points for me were the size, the fact that it doesn't glare in the sun and that I can change the font for my over 40 eyes!!;) I'll let you know and plan on downloading SWB's Ancient History as soon as I get it!! That way I won't have to carry that baby around with me in book form.:001_huh:
Frontier Mom
How much are downloads? Do you save money on books? Per the ones I looked at, they are cheaper than new to download.
HappyCrazyMama
I don't know much about Kindle. Can you download books from anywhere or just Amazon? Can you download public domain books? Is it better to read on than a computer? I don't like reading books on a monitor. katilac
I don't know much about Kindle. Can you download books from anywhere or just Amazon? Can you download public domain books? Is it better to read on than a computer? I don't like reading books on a monitor. I am also still waiting on mine, but I can answer some of these questions. You can only purchase e-books from Amazon, in the Kindle format. Amazon has some free public domain books available in Kindle format, and the Guttenburg Project has started a volunteer effort to get their titles in Kindle format. In addition to Kindle format, it can also handle .txt documents. Other formats, like .doc and .pdf, have to be converted first. There is a charge of ten cents per document for the one step coversion process; the two step process is free (and I think just involves emailing the document and then waiting for it to be emailed back to you). So, you can read almost anything on the Kindle, just not as instantly as it is when you download from the Kindle store. I haven't read on the Kindle itself yet, but I have tried out the Sony e-reader, which has the same basic type of screen. It is FAR easier to read than a monitor - - it is pretty much like reading from a sheet of paper! The screens are reflective, not backlit, which means that you need ambient light to read, it doesn't provide its own light if you're reading in the dark. The good part about reflective screens is that, unlike a monitor, you can read in bright sunlight. Pricewise, the New York Times best seller list is priced at $9.99. Other books vary in price, and may or may not be much cheaper than the print version. SWB's history book is $20 in hardcover; $15 in kindle. Herding Cats in NC
I have a first generation Kindle. Amazon used to have a Kindle discussion board, but they've recently dropped it. Kindle Boards is a forum where you can find lots of good information on the Kindle. The most dangerous thing about the Kindle is that it makes it way too easy to buy books! But, you can get many, many free books for your kindle (i.e. those that are available from Project Gutenberg). Here are a couple of websites where you can download classics for free: http://www.munseys.com/ http://feedbooks.com/books http://manybooks.net/ You can actually use the experimental web browser (which is very rudimentary) to access the manybooks.net website from your Kindle - go to the web browser & enter http://mnybks.net . Then you can search for books & download them right to your Kindle. You need to download the mobipocket format. Enjoy your Kindle!

I have a hard time spending money on myself.

Frontier Mom
FrontierMom... don't you mean "as well as SWB's new book? ;) SWB Well, you are the reason I bought one!! After hearing that I could get the book on the sleek new Kindle for reading during baseball and softball practices, I splurged. Better than carrying the big book around anyway. So, of course, your book will be my first purchase!! See, it's kinda your fault.;) Now, if I can only figure out a way to get you to autograph it when I come to your conference in May.:glare:
Vida Winter
Many of the public domain classics are very low cost on Kindle. I know you can get them online for free, but it's a small cost for the convenience.

katilac
hear, hear! I would LOVE to get SOTW and WTM in Kindle format. I'm limping along with old, old editions . . . but I'd spring for new ones if I could tote them on my Kindle!
