ereks mom
ER wants a good, sturdy backpack for lugging around his stuff. He has a cheap-o one and after only one semester it is falling apart. Someone suggested L.L. Bean. I also heard Lands End backpacks were good. Got a favorite you'd recommend? Ria
Bean and REI have a guarantee as long as you own the product. That said, my twins do not need backpacks to lug anything around at college; for many of their classes the books don't go to class. athena1277
I say you can't go wrong with a Jansport. They have a lifetime warranty. I used them in high school and college, and sent them in several times over the years and received a new backpack. No complaints with them. lighthouseacademy
I used a Jansport bag. I think it was about $20 when I bought it. I used it for at least 4 years of college with lots of books in it and it is still used today... although much lighter use. (BTW I graduated almost 8 years ago!) Suzanne in ABQ
Yup. I used my Jansport through 5 years of engineering school (iow: lots of books), graduated in 1996, and still use it periodically. I think it will outlive me!
Oakblossoms
I prefer a message bag with a waist strap. But, you can find backpacks with waist straps as well. It's nice because it puts the weight wear it should be. Maria/ME
Well,Jansport seems to get the vote here! However, I was going to suggest LLBean...(not just because I live in Maine, promise!) They really take a beating and hold up really well....for my dd11 anyway...although, it's not college lugging all your stuff around camping/letterboxing/homeschooling/beaching can be just as hard on the backpack! Lifetime guarantee also!

In The Great White North
LLBean. The kids have used theirs for years and their return policy is wonderful.
Laurel
LLBean. He won't ever have to buy another backpack. Lifetime guarantee.
crewmom
Land's End backpacks are good and they are having a sale right now. I haven't had one myself, but I got dd one for her last years of public school. Granted it was 1st and 2nd grades, but I have heard rave reviews about them from adults too. I had a Columbia in college and I still use it when we go on trips and such. I adore that backpack. Lots of padding in the shoulders and other cool features. Plus, it cleans up well--still looks new after 6 years.
KatieJ
My son found an OGIO at Goodwill..new with tags...for 5.00. He loves it. It is a brand he would buy had he not found this one at Goodwill. Years and years ago, we bought a Land's End back pack for our daughter. She says she still has it. She was a lifeguard thru college and for a while after she got married and this bag went with her everywhere.
Tap
We like Jansport here too. I buy them at Costco, Ross or TJ Maxx for about $20.
Kelli in TN
My daughter is in her freshman year of college and has been carrying the same overloaded backpack since her senior year of high school. It's an LLBean. GREAT bag. She loads it and then overloads it and keeps hanging in there.
TN Mama
Another vote for L.L. Bean.
TeacherZee
L.L. Bean and Jansport. I had a Jansport one all through High School and it is still knocking around the house somewhere.
MomsintheGarden
We splurged this past summer for an Eddie Bauer Adventure Backpack for ds: http://www.eddiebauer.com/EB/Bags--Gear/Backpacks--Messengers/index.cat?viewAll=y#ppl={type%3A%22transition%22%2CensembleId%3A%2232961%22%2CformatStr%3A%22product%22%2CpassedIdObj%3A{%22ensembleId%22%3A%2232961%22}%2CcategoryId%3A%2224451%22%2CpathInfo%3A%22C1C5C24451%22%2CcolorId%3A%22005%22%2CsizeIdSelected%3A%22-1%22%2CquantitySelected%3A%22-1%22%2CimageName%3A%22EB08IC_0231487_005C1%22%2CimageTypeCode%3A%22C%22%2CcatPath%3A%22categoryId%3D24451~~pCategoryId%3D5~~gpCategoryId%3D1~~categoryName%3DBACKPACKS--MESSENGERS~~pCategoryName%3DBAGS--GEAR~~gpCategoryName%3DEB%22%2Ccs%3A%220%22} He has a laptop, so we wanted one that was waterproof and roomy enough. We also searched for reviews on different backpacks, and students in general seemed to like the EBs. Some other backpacks got poor reviews because they were not waterproof enough. Expensive books & computers were ruined in rainstorms. Ds has been very happy with this pack. It still looks great after being lugged around a large state school all semester. Chris in VA
Beefing up the Land's End vote! Ds had his in 7th grade, and carries it to college now. Great shape, guaranteed, easy to send back if you need to (they will pay postage, I believe).
bettyandbob
I like LLBean a lot. There seems to be nothing that can destroy them. Additionally, I still have the Jansport backpack I purchased during my sophomore year in 1984. I do have a LandsEnd backpack--it was a diaper bag backpack. I don't carry the matching changing pad in the pack anymore. It's a well constructed bags. We haven't put it throught the beatings my dc have put on the LLBean bags or that my Jansport recieved so I can't say for sure. Unless you find a good sale, I would purchase a roomy top model. Your son will use it forever.
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
I love LL Bean. I used to be a Land's End fan (and they were slightly cheaper) but after Sears bought them out I've had more issues with quality. Now I go with LL Bean and have given them a beating-they stand up and the company stands behind its product. There is alot to consider though-will they carry books, a laptop, junk for the gym, lots of MP3 player and water pockets now... Also, what is in fashion on their campus, will they be riding a bike, do folks use the bags with wheels (I see lots of younger kids with those)... LL Bean has many options. Laura Corin
Calvin has had a Landsend backpack for seven years now and it's still holding up. They have quite a few in their overstocks section at present. Laura
