AuntieM
We just finished reading The Hiding Place. It was *wonderful* but somewhat difficult. I read it myself years ago, but this was this first out-loud time. Whew! Now we need something lighter, but not too juvenile. My kids are 14, 11 & 11. I will appreciate your suggestions! love2read
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase perfect for the 11 year olds and creepy enough to hold the attention of the 14 year old. The Gammage Cup. Outstanding book that you rarely hear about. Have you read The Giver yet? If not, I'd start with that book. The Gammage Cup and The Giver both will provide topics for deep discussion.
love2read
I didn't notice the "lighter" until just now. Let me try again. The Princess Bride, Holes. It's hard to come up with light ones that are quality books.
1bassoon
Phantom Tollbooth? We just laugh ourselves silly over that one.
Jane Elliot
We (13yo, 12yo, 10yo, 8yo) are nearly finished Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. It's been a long time since anything has gone over this well here. They love it. Some read alouds are harder for me to read aloud than others, for some reason. This one is particularly easy for me to read. It just flows.
linders
by Neil Gaiman. Just won the 2009 Newbery. Starts creepy, is strange but in a fascinating way throughout.
Erica in OR
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. I haven't done it as a readaloud, since my kids aren't quite old enough yet to appreciate it, but I read it myself and quite enjoyed it. It is over 400 pages, but quite engaging throughout. The review on amazon listed it as ages 9-12, but I have heard other adults say they enjoyed it. Erica in OR
