Phonics advice...McRuffy/WP?

Ok so with the recent wonderful conversations on Phonics, I have become quite interested in making certain dd gets a good start with this.

I was considering using either McRuffy or WinterPromise LA for K next year, and wondering if anyone has any input on these programs and if they teach actual phonics and spelling, as far as decoding and encoding? Do they rely heavily on sight words or word families?

THanks!

I like WP's LA. I've used the K and we're in 1st right now. I like that it blends the concepts of teaching phonograms and word families. It's been a good mix for us. I've used Spell to Write and Read, SL and a few others. But I'm seeing more progress with WP than I did with the others. (just for reference, I used those others with more than one child...I'm not torturing one ds :) ) I really like the readers that come with the K and 1st. The K are similar to Bob books, but colorful and the stories are actually cute!

The only complaint I have w/ WP is the LA seem to be a year ahead. We comleted SL's LA1 last year (which uses ETC books 1-3) and WP's LA 1 STARTS with ETC book 6. So we are using LA1, but he's in 2nd grade.

McRuffy's is definitely a phonics-based program. We used the 1st grade (color edition) this year and have loved it. I feel it is very thorough and hits the concepts from several different angles. Now as we are headed toward the end of it, I feel my son is very well-rounded in phonics for his age. He is reading well above 1st grade level. And the only thing we did before McRuffy's was 100EZ Lessons.

And, the best part...it's supereasy for the teacher to implement...pretty much open and go.

Yes, I felt it was a thorough LA program (for the younger years). I have not liked it for 4th grade and up, but that's ONLY b/c we use IEW for writing and I didn't like how WP taught writing. But if you're wanting a spelling, grammar, writing, vocab. w/ instructor's guide type program, you will probably be very pleased w/ WP.

I do wish they would broaden the selection of books per program, but that may come in a few years. But until then, you could just pull books that your child would like. They don't correlate w/ the LA program like SL's.
