mamato9
My 7 ydd is learning to play the violin but she is borowing her older sisters 3/4 size. My mom would like to get her own but I'm not sure what size. I know ideally we should have her sized for one but that is just not possible. I was thinking a 1/2 size but then I saw they also carry 1/4 and 1/16. She is tall for her age. Also, I was wondering what brand would be good. I bought my older dd's violin on amazon and the brand was Crystalcello. It seems like a fine violin but wanted to check around for other brands. Amazon sell's them for around $40 - $50. I know Costco carries them but I think that is more in the fall. TIA Lora
langfam
Check out http://www.sharmusic.com/violins_bows_body.asp?catID=2 They have a good trade-in policy when you move up a size. I've discovered that it's so important to get a good instrument for learning violin. A well set-up instrument will be easier to play, hence easier to learn, and increase interest and satisfaction. My DD has inherited several violins (5!!) from friends and relatives, but most were not well-made. Only one of them was, and ever since she got her good violin 4 years ago, her playing has improved tremendously, earning herself 4 music scholarships throughout high school at the local university. Here's an article: http://www.stringsmagazine.com/issues/strings96/coverstory.html.
Shasta Mom
Google correct violin size and you'll see what size she needs - you just need a tape measure. THen, rent her a violin. Mostly place are under $20/month. Ifshin Violins in Berkely is where we've rented. They ship anywhere - so you don't have to be local. Most music shops rent and will ship too...... A good size will help her. Don't buy at that age because if she's 7, she'll move up in size pretty frequently....
Marie in Oh
is small and she is in a half and my 7 yo is small and in a 1/4. We bought used ones because you can get a fine used intsrument for 150.00 and that is only about 9 months of rental fees. They will be in their sizes for longer than that unless they just are growing like crazy.
Lisa Kjeld...in CA
Ifshin Violins in Berkely is where we've rented. They ship anywhere - so you don't have to be local. We just rented a double bass from here and were very impressed with the staff and instruments. We've rented many, many violins from http://www.pottersviolins.com and love their instruments. They have two quality levels for rentals and 100% of your rental fees for 18 months goes towards a purchase. We're in CA and they are in Maryland and we've never had a problem with shipping. Also, I completely agree with getting a quality instrument. Our daughter started on a hand-me-down of poor quality and the difference in her playing and thus her attitude when she finally got a good instrument was incredible! Joy!
