1bassoon
Based on information on this board, and research, and pondering and praying, here's what I'm thinking. Am I off-base? Tell me honestly, ladies! (Quick background: dd16 is struggling through Chalkdust - pulling a solid 91 average, but taking forever. Ds 12 is using LoF, about to enter Beginning Algebra) What if I had dd16 work on CD Alg. 2 for 45 minutes every morning - she stops wherever she ends up, even if it's mid-lesson. Then, later that day, she works through a LoF book for 30 minutes. I might EVEN start her at Beginning Algebra - or should I just hit advanced algebra? (I'll know better when I actually have the books in my hands. . . . . ) What are the ramifications of this? What if she doesn't finish the CD book by June - what do I give her credit for? Alg II, anyways, if she has the hours in? And then in the fall, we just keep plugging along? Y'all have NO idea how radical this is for me. . . . . .the idea of combining two curricula. . . . . . . Michelle in AL
How many problems per day is she doing? I haven't used CD algebra, but did use CD Geometry. The text had tons of problems, but his recommendations on assignments made it manageable. Are there recommendations for which problems to assign in Alg 2? She's doing about 30 or so per exercise - she picks them out herself. I've actually be wondering if I would save her time if I assigned them. . . 1bassoon
:lurk5: Another option I thought of - have ds do Lial's at the same time as LoF. Still eagerly awaiting opinions!
Michelle in AL
That seems like a lot. If she has a 91 average, I don't know if a knowledge deficit is the problem, it may be too many problems. We use Foerster's and the TM assigns about 2-15 problems per day. When you have just 2 problems, they can take 2 pages to solve. When we did CD there were some cream colored sheets that said "read me first" on them. That's were the recommended problems were. Do they have that for algebra too? 1bassoon
She says they recommend 25 probs per day. . . . and she works for 45 minutes, and does about 30. Her 2nd semester average (so far - we're only 2 weeks into it) is a bit lower - about an 84 or so - her 1st semester was higher b/c she aced the review chapter. Maybe she's not so far off base? I guess I'm just frustrated that she may very possibly not finish the text by the end of the year, due to some - um - lack of oversight on my part in the fall. I'm still kicking around the idea of Lial's and LoF with ds12. He so loves LoF! But I don't actually own any of the CD materials (Alg 2 is on loan from a friend), and to purchase them would probably be a budget-buster. OTOH - I would have 4 kids to go through them. Still kicking things around over here.
