MFW & SWR

DH & I decided that we wanted to use SWR as we venture out on our hs journey. :) This last year we are doing an extremely relaxed preschool w/ ds 3/4. He has learned all of the sounds of the basic phonograms and can write many of them in salt and even on the whiteboard. He isn't ready to start the spellng lists, though.

I am contemplating MFW K next year for him and was just going to kind of tweak the phonics so that it meshed more with SWR, but I am wondering if I can use the MFW phonics program without ruining our SWR journey.

From my SWR seminar, I think I understand that blending letter sounds (MFW) vs. "thinking to spell" (SWR) takes two different parts of the brain. I don't want to mess him up (according to the SWR philosophy) by teaching him to blend, but I just wonder if he's ready to read next year before he's ready to spell, can we go out of order, so to speak?

I don't know if this makes sense, my main concern is that I'm just wondering if we can teach ds to read using MFW next year but then switch to SWR and am looking if anyone's done this.

You will be okay doing the MFW K phonics (I wouldn't worry about the part of the brain idea)... but if you do only the MFW K phonics it will be a step back. You will need to continue with the phonogram cards, and you may want to start covering more variety before MFW K does. At the end of the program for the year, you will have only covered three letter CVC words and a few simple sight words.

Do you think that the whole program would be taking a step back? We'll be completing Saxon K this year (a breeze) but I love the Biblical focus of MFW K. We were looking at WP HIH but I feel like it's missing the Bible focus I want. Grrr....

I did MFWK with all three of mine who were already reading and just added whatever reading I needed to it. We loved the Biblical Focus and the fact that it made learning so fun and excited. One of our goals was to make sure our kids enjoyed learning especially in the young years. It has worked so far and our kids learn on their own time and ask to "do more school". Even our 6th grader.

I plan to do MFW in the fall with my 4 yo DD who is already reading and writing. I'm using the MFW TM and a couple pages from the student pages (for creation and the calendar). MFW phonics would be step back for my DD, so we'll follow along with the letter of the week, but we will continue with what we currently are doing for phonics (and math, too). I'm really excited about the message and activities from MFW and I think it's going to be a great fit with bit of supplementing.
