KidsHappen
Yesterday, as I was loading the following items: dog food cat food fish food enough people food to feed an army a month's supply of household products into my car at Walmart, I realized that I am an actual soccer-mom. I have two kids that play soccer. I live in a suburbs. I drive a mini-van. I have the obligatory ponytail and baseball cap. I have six kids, a dog, four cats, several fish aquariums. All of the neighbor hood kids hang out at my house. I bake cookies for them. How did I go from hippie chick to soccer-mom? I boarded the homebirth, breastfeeding, homeschooling train and got off at the soccer-mom station. :001_huh: Life sure does take some strange turns sometimes. Ah well, I would have never chosen this life but I can't imagine a better one. :)
Osmosis Mom
For the record, then ds has been playing since age 4 and is on a competitive team. However, to me soccer-mom connotates someone who lives and breathes her son's soccer career and who herself lives socially through her child's soccer circles. Even though ds loves soccer and is only happy if there is a practice or game going on then I don't identify myself as a soccer mom. I am not sucking up to the management at soccer and I am more tomyself than hanging out with the other parents (who are tearing down the coach or the other team etc.). I am also a baby-carrying, breastfeeding homeschooling mom, but has certainly ever felt myself like a hippie. I might even feel ultra-conservative depending on the company, LOL!!!! Ah well, I would have never chosen this life but I can't imagine a better one. :) It's okay. You can look like both, and still be whomever you want to be inside. Some days, I look so much like "business-career mom" and I talk and kind of act like her, too. It makes me giggle because that's just so.... grown-up. It feels like a play to me. Some days, I am the quintessential hippie witch chick, which also makes me giggle a bit, but for different reasons. :D Under it all, I'm far more complex than a few labels can possibly describe, and so are you. Tracey in TX
I think of a soccer mom as a suburban stay-at-home whose life currently revolves around her family. I'm definitely a soccer mom sans the pony tail. Car filled with sports gear, snacks, car pool, and schedules on the iPhone. LOL Even keep a baseball cap for "just in case" moments. Without the just in case baseball hat. Sometimes I have a ponytail, sometimes not. But in the case of *soccer*, I'm not the one tearing down the coach. I am the the coach. With basketball, tennis and football, I'm the one on the sidelines watching the coach, admiring that they can share their knowledge with this group of kids who only 1/2 the time pay attention! Oh, and I'm happy to be this mom!
Ruthie
I think of a soccer mom as a suburban stay-at-home whose life currently revolves around her family. This is what I think, too. I still live in the same area I grew up in. Once I was driving my Suburban, full of my kids and their friends, dropping everyone off at different places, driving down the same roads I did as a teen learning to drive and the reality of life's preciousness just hit me. I love my life :). Ruth
dhudson
I think all of us wake up with the "how did I get here?". I wake up with the "Who in the world thinks I am responsible enough to handle 3 kids, homeschooling, a house, directing other peoples children and a husband? That's just crazy talk!" I did recently get rid of my mini-van and got a Subaru Tribeca (still seats 7 but looks way cooler and gets better gas-mileage) and I do feel less-soccer Mom and more "cool Mom". Oh well, I was cool once but not near as happy.
