Pretty in Pink
It feels odd posting this here but there is nobody IRL that I know to ask. None of my friends are into tattoos and all of my associates are other HS moms. I can see me bringing this up at the next Mom's Night Out. Or not.:tongue_smilie:
TwinMominTX
I think the best way is to ask someone in your area that has a tatoo. They can usually tell you who in the area is good - and who isn't.
Guest
Referrals. Also, visit the places; talk to the artist. If you're not satisfied with the cleanliness, then leave! ETA: By referrals, I mean asking people you see who having something you like. It doesn't have to be people you know - in the grocery store, at the park, church, whatever. E_Edgerton
Definitely word of mouth...people who have good work will want to recommend the artists...people who are not pleased with the work they have done will also be happy to give you a warning. I would also look into artists who have specialties. For example if you want a nautical tattoo, you may want to ask around at some of the shops in your area...odds are there will be an artist who has gotten quite good at that style..same with black/white, portraits, etc. Good luck. I love tattoos!
Starr
I like the idea of bringing it up at the next Mom's group! Take a stroll through the local college campus and ask around.
dawn of ns
Check into state regulations so you know what cartificates and licenses a shop should have and ask to see them. Make sure it's an established shop that's been around for awhile. Ask to see the artists portfolios or examples of their work. Most important, ask people who did their work when you see tattos that are impressive.
RJH
I found my guy by looking at the web sites of our local shops. Most of the artists have their portfolios online.
Desert Rat
Word of mouth. Find someone who is wearing really nice art in the style you're looking for and ask for a name. I've been really lucky with my last few. I've stayed with the same shop and used different artists for their specialities. I like the variety each artist brings to the work I get.
