Nissi
graders. I know of Joy Hakim's title "War, Terrible War." Are there any others? I would also like documetaries and movie titles for this period. I know of Ken Burn's Civil War which we plan on seeing. Thanks, Nissi
two2homeschool
There is a great book called "Bull Run" by Newbery Award-winning author Paul Fleischman that deals with the 1st battle of the Civil War (which took place at Bull Run). It won numorous awards and is recommended for ages 10 and up. Just as an aside, "Bull Run" is also used in the book "Deconstructing Penguins" by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone as an indept example of explaining English Lit in terms of theme, characters, setting, etc. Maybe your library has it as well. All the best, Trish
Hoggirl
This book is suggested for 9 - 12 year olds. It alternates between telling about the war itself (battles, causes, etc.) and sort of "life in the times" topics. There are projects (making hard tack, a cipher, etc.) as well. I think it is a super overview of the Civil War.

LynnG in Arizona
I would read Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. I believe it's a Newbury Award book. It is top notch historical fiction on the Civil War - it presents both sides and is geared exactly for the 5th-9th grade level. HTH. :)
Rhondabee
I would read Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. I believe it's a Newbury Award book. HTH. :) I was going to suggest the same thing! ;) We read it out loud (5th and 8th). We would stop to read excerpts about the mentioned battles in the book Fields of Fury, which is an award-winning non-fiction book for middle schoolers (it is listed in the Logic Stage Supplementary History resources). fyi: My 8th grader could have Across Five Aprils by himself, but not my 5th grader. It is a *beautiful* story, and I'm so glad we read it!
Stacia
You might want to see if your library has the Book of the American Civil War. We enjoy the Brown Paper School books.
