A home for their hearts
I'm still trying to figure out what to do about math. We are using R&S and will soon be starting the 3rd grade book. I love the drill that R&S gives but it doesn't explain the concepts behind math. I would like to supplement it with something else or just eventually switch entirely. I'm looking at BJU math but what exactly would I need for third grade? I'm not too bad at math but I have trouble explaining it to my dc. I don't want to go to the poor house buying a math curriculum! Any advice? Thanks
TracyR
I really like BJU math. You would at least at the minimum need the teachers manual ( if you need help explaining math) , student workbook, and the student manipulative packet. Also when using BJU math make sure you keep up with drill. It is extremely easy to forget about this and let it go because its not incorporated into the program. Its up to you to do. 5ray2006
Hi, I am using BJU math K and 2nd grade now. I love this math program. IMHO, I think you need to only purchase the student worktext and the Teacher's Manual. If you think your child will need extra practice, there is a math reviews workbook available. There is one review lesson that correlates with the current lesson you are working on for extra practice. I've never purchased the student manips. or the teacher manips. You can use things you have on hand already. I agree with the previous poster to do extra drill sheets. The cd-rom that is available with TM does have drill sheets available to print. However, I'm currently using the Saxon Math 2 drill sheets from their curriculum. (I know, I spend the $20 to purchase these, however my son and I are just so used to the format and I think Saxon does a wonderful job drilling math facts-I don't use the rest of their curriculum). I think you will enjoy BJU Math. It is a mastery type program with a chapter review and a cumulative review at the end of each lesson. AudreyTN
My dd8 has done about 1/2 of BJU Math 3. She just isn't getting it. I bought EVERYTHING!! She is completing Math Mammoth Multiplication 1 and then we will start the 2nd 1/2 of Saxon 3.
SnowWhite
I bit the bullet and bought the whole set for BJU Math 2 and plan to do the same for Math 3. No, we don't do ALL the reviews workbook pages, but I love having them there when I need them. If I were to leave something out it would be that. (My set included: Teacher Manual, Student Workbook, Student Manipulatives, Reviews Workbook, Tests/Answer Key. There was a CD with the TM for teacher visuals) I could do without the tests I suppose, as I could use the Reviews book chapter review in place of the test. TracyR
I've used BJU math for K, 1, 2, and 3 and I found that the student manipulative book was more necessary for grades 3 and up. I didn't have much use for them for K,1,and 2 , though I did use them. I found though that I really needed it for third though.
