What Do Your Afterschool.......

Recommended Posts

As I sit here, on a snow day and the kids are home from school, I'm trying to plan my day and what activities to choose to do with the kids, afterschool activities that is. That prompted me to ask what you all out there do with your children.

Everything we are currently using is in my siggy. We only get to a few things a couple of times per week. However, math and reading are usually done on a regular basis. We just finished reading My Father's Dragon. I think we will be reading Charlotte's Web or Mr.Popper's Penguins next.

My girls after school with me....

K and 2nd:

My K does abeka 1 math, letters and sounds and language 1-I rip out 4 pages a week...staple them and tell them they can do it anytime and give it to me on friday. They love doing this!!

My 2nd grader does the same with abeka 3rd grade books.

Reading from Sonlight Core 1: I can usually do all my reading in 2-3 days and our read alouds are done at night for bedtime.

I am adding in IEW writing with my 2nd grader now. She will be starting Monday with her older brother who is still homeschooled. (12)

Thats about it!

6th grader:

NEM

Rod and Staff, lessons done orally

Shakespeare, Folger's

Realms of Gold reader, Core Knowledge

History and Geography, Core Knowledge

Men of Rome, Memoria Press

Ecce Romani

My son doesn't do all of the above every day. Instead, he'll study a little of each throughout the week. Weekends are usually a little heavier. Summers are heaviest.

Also, during the school year, we only have a set schedule for math, but next year we might do the same for Latin. All other subjects are more flexible.

I'm still working out the kinks in our schedule...but here is what we are doing each week.

second grade yahoos -

Kumon math everyday

sonlight core 1/2 history - readers - realouds

Story of the world volume one

*planning science fridays - in the works - we just bought sonlight science 1 & 2

Pre K Yahoo -

Kumon math and reading

sonlight core K history - readers - re alouds

* will participate in science fridays

Ideally, I want to layout a schedule that outlines each night of the week and what we will do for that night. I want it to look like fun for the kids and really do want it to be fun for them....(that is the readings, history and science parts of what we do)

The curricula we actually use consistently are Core Knowledge and Singapore Math. Oh, and "educational" videos, audiobooks, computer programs.

Then there are a lot of other things in dc's desk apprentices that are use sporadically, intermittently, seldom, or not at all. I don't worry about these too much, since I value play (and sometimes just plain doing nothing) pretty highly, lol!

We don't afterschool during the school year. My children were all three right on target with the other kids so I don't really think I have much to contribute other than tutoring what they are alreay studying. We will summer school using CLP Language, CLP Reading, CLP Math (middle two), ACT prep (oldest) and writing. Two hours of academics and one hour of free reading 5 days per week is good for us. Well, me. The kids think I'm awful to even suggest it.

My 9th grader just started public school full-time. The subjects we cover fully at home are Latin and logic.

We also dig deeper into his literature and history studies and I assign additional papers on those subjects, since it doesn't seem to me as if his teachers require enough writing.
