Sunkirst
Now that DS can really, truly read, we are slowly adding some of the TWTM recs. He is a new 11, and is at (5th) grade level for most things, although his reading is still a bit slow. I feel like he is just entering the logic stage, and that if I introduce some logic now that he will be receptive to it. I am looking for independent work that will take 10-20 minutes/session. What does the Hive recommend, and why? Thanks,
Hillary in KS
When ds was in 5th grade we started with MindBenders and puzzles. Those were a HUGE hit! I think we did all the A and B level books. Ds is now in 7th grade, and we started with WTM's Critical Thinking recommendation, but about 1/2way through it became deadly dull. We backtracked and tried again, but couldn't make it past that point. So we switched to "Fallacy Detective" by the Bluedorns and are working our way through that. It's done a much better job of holding ds' attention, and we'll go back to Critical Thinking for one more try after "Fallacy Detective" is done. Alana in Canada
I heartily recommend MindBenders--buit do get the books--The CD's don't really have that many problems, or so I've heard. The books are expensive, though, so use a page protector or other erasable transparent medium over top and use an erasabe marker. Have your son re-write the answer on a piece of paper once he's worked out the problem and that way he or you can check the solutions. That way, you can use the book,s again for you kids coming up. Others have also recommended Dandylion or something like that.
Shasta Mom
I got the Logic Countdown and Logic Liftoff books on some recommendations here. We've enjoyed them so far. You get a lot more for your buck than mindbenders. I think there are over 50 exercises per book at $9.50 at RR. I've looked at the Mindbenders samples on line and these are the same exercises - just many more. For almost 10 yo ds, we're just finishing Logic Countdown now and will continue with the Liftoff book.
Sunkirst
Thanks everyone! Mindbenders and the Logic Countdown Series were 2 of my top contenders . I appreciate the tip about the page protectors so that the 2 dds can re-use later. Thanks too for the review of Fallacy Detective vs. the Critical Thinking books. I'm sure I'll refer to that later.
