Kfamily
Hi! Dd is in 6th and using R&S 6 but I'm wondering what we should do for 7th pre-algebra. She is doing well with R&S and we have been using this text since 3rd. We supplement a little with Singapore (she's using 4A right now). Should we 1. Use R&S8 with supplements of Singapore 2. Use only Singapore 5&6 next year and add challenging word problems and intensive practice. 3. something else? I would rather not use Saxon or Teaching Textbooks. I like Chalkdust and might use them for Algebra and then on but the Pre-algebra is very expensive. Any advice? P.S. Is NEM too much for an average student with an average teacher? :001_smile: Edited January 28, 2009 by Kfamily

We are in Module D. Heather

JFSinIL
I have both Videotext (all but the last module) on DVD AND am using Chalkdust prealgebra this year (got a late start with it - VT was wrong for this kid- so will be finishing CD over the summer, too). Both are excellent programs - I think CD has an edge in the fantastic instructor. I prefer the textbook that CD uses over the VT materials, too. I started out this year with TT prealgebra since dd had done TT6 easily - however, the format was different enough from TT6 that it just was, well, BORING. SO we got the VT I had used with her older brother out of the basement, and she did Module A. And bombed the test on it. SO, since folks here recommended it so highly, I sold TT and ordered the (gulp - $$$) Chalkdust. Worth every penny, and I know I will resell it and get half my $$$ back. I need to sell VT, too - just too lazy to get it posted. As long as you make a kid use notepaper and not write in the workbooks, etc. you can figure on reselling a math program for 50% - so the "real" cost is half of what you paid. Or so I rationalize to myself. ;) PS - I might add, I managed to almost complete a PhD without EVER taking algebra, or any higher math, in high school or college. No - you could not get away with that now!!!! So I am watching these math programs and working problems alongside my kids - CD is great for this old brain ;-). Kfamily
I'm getting great reviews of Chalkdust and I've read that before in other posts which is why I had practically decided to go with Chalkdust for sure with Algebra and all other math throughout high school. I'm glad to hear you like the Pre-Algebra program in particular. I thought it might be a good idea to go ahead and transition over since we will be using CD anyway (most likely). Now if I can only handle the cost..... or actually if dh can!:D
