What level of Rod & Staff English would be equivalent to 8th grade?

Recommended Posts

I think you might get some different answers to this one. :001_smile: Some people use it on grade level. I do not. I used the 6th grade text in 8th and then started the 7th grade text in 9th. It is very thorough. I don't know what the actual grade to grade match up is.

Not exactly sure but I am doing level 7 with my 8th grader and find it very thorough. Since grammar never really changes, 6 or 7 would give you a great program. I started R&S a little late because I originally started the year with Easy Grammar. I went back to R&S and plan on using it this year and into next year as well. I doubt I go on to Level 8 as I feel 6 & 7 are great foundations in grammar. I use them somewhat slower but as a final grammar text, if that makes any sense.

I did buy the worksheets as they are really cheap. Then, we stop at certain points and do review so I know the concepts are being cemented in. I am taking a slow and steady approach which is working well for us.

R&S English 7 teaches gerunds, infinitives and verbals which R&S 6 doesn't. I think R&S E.7 should be done before high school.

My 9th grader is doing very well in English at his private high school because much of it's a review of what he learned at home with R&S English 7 (never did R&S E.8).

But then again some schools NEVER teach the stuff that's in R&S English 6 never mind R&S E.7!

So am I overwhelming my 5th grader with R&S 5? She seems to be handling it well but we started with level 3 a couple of years ago. Is it a big jump to 6 or can I plan on it for next year?

I think you will be OK. I only got behind because we did Easy Grammar one year, which I didn't think worked for us. I think they can handle grade level easy if you stick with R&S.

The composition part of R&S English is on grade level. If you do a grade level behind in R&S E. then the writing/comp. will not be on their grade level. In most public schools today they have dc ahead in writing compared to R&S. But remember, quantity of writing doesn't always mean quality writing.

We never got to R&S English 8 with my older dc because we did a year of Calvert 6 which I couldn't STAND the language arts program. Grade 6 was a grammar bust and we then picked up R&S English 6 in grade 7 (he did R&S E. 3-5).

No you're not overwhelming her, and it's not a big jump. The really great thing about R&S (imho) is that each year builds upon the previous year, so while it seems like a big jump, it's really not. If I had an older child who hadn't had any formal grammar at all, I think I would start them w/ year 5 though. 6 might be too much for someone w/ no background at all.

they are really prepared to move up each year. We started in grade 3 with grade 3 and grade 7 this year is quite easy for him.

I think even if you started as late as grade 5, if they had proper grammar studies prior, it would be fine.

:iagree:

We started with 6th for my dd and 8th from my ds after using ABeka on grade level. They both did fine, all the way through R&S 10th grade. I believe as long as you start with grade 5 R&S on grade level, you should be fine.

My SIL teaches HS English in the PS and says her students were taught almost no grammar, so it would be hard to compare with the PS. I think R&S probably teaches more than a student really needs do know, but sometimes a student needs more than just the basics, just because it trains their brain to recognize and speak/write correct English. We're sticking with it with my 5 younger dc. My 5th and 3rd graders are in the 5th & 3rd grade R&S books, respectively, and are doing fine. The more language-arts oriented child has fewer corrections, though, but the other child is learning. We plan to continue all the way through with all of our children.
