Stacey in MA
Hi there - DS9 is 4th grade, presently doing SOTW 4. In this activity book, SWB often mentions in the Additional History Reading section certain items that should be "Previewed". They are usually very heavy-duty, original versions of long books - books my 9yo would never read cover to cover at this age. So, do you do these? WHAT exactly do you do to "preview" them? Do you assign certain pages, or just go over what the book is about it verbally? Do you bother with these? DS is an average but reluctant reader, and would drop to the floor if I asked him to open a 500 page book, even it were to read the Introduction only. KWIM? Yet I really like the idea of touching on these real works in the end of this trivium cycle so that when we get to the next cycles the titles won't be unheard of. How do you use these "Preview" list items? Thanks! - Stacey in MA
klmama
I always assumed that the "preview" meant I should look at them first because there was some info that might be too much for certain children. It says something about that in the intro to the activity book. As for what to do with them? If I can't read it aloud to all of the dc, I usually don't check it out. My oldest can handle a lot, but the next two can't at all. If the book isn't one the oldest will just pick up and read alone, I don't see the point in having it now. I can almost always find something else on the same topic that is more age-appropriate. Edited January 26, 2009 by klmama
WTMindy
I looked them over. A lot of times they had graphic pictures or disturbing passages. Honestly, we usually skipped the books because I found that a lot of the extra reading in SOTW 4 was just too old for the kids.
Stacey in MA
My DS9 isn't up to some of the reading selection in Vol4, buy my DD7 is a voracious reader, and will definitely be ready for many of those longer, meatier books when she gets to Vol. 4. I have found for DS9 though, that I often use the titles in the AG as topic guides, then just find similar books at our library that are more his level. Anyway, was just looking for thoughts on this. Thanks ladies! There is definitely a big jump in the overal level between Vol 3 and Vol4 of SOTW. Thanks! - Stacey in MA
Soph the vet
We are in SOTW 4 this year. Preview to me means looking over the material and seeing if your dc can handle it emotionally and academically. Many things I read aloud and "edit" as I am reading.
