VP Rec's for Saxon Math

I have never looked at Veritas Press before :blushing: and have had the pleasure to browse their catalog recently. They have some really great stuff!

The catalog recommends using Saxon for math and starting Saxon K in preschool, Saxon 1 for K, etc. Has anyone done this? I have an advanced 4yo who I think would be fully capable of working through Saxon K now and getting into Saxon 1 by fall. I'm wondering how this works for the long term? I am not using Saxon with my oldest right now, but someone recently suggested to me that we should consider switching to Saxon for grade 4. I'm leaning towards that now, so eventually both dc would be using Saxon.

Any thoughts? Anyone else follow the VP rec's for math?

One more question: Can I skip Saxon K, continue with the current math workbooks we are doing now and go straight to Saxon 1 for K? Where do I find out what previous knowledge and skills are required to start Saxon 1?

My 2nd dd is finishing up Saxon 1 in the next couple of weeks and will move onto Saxon 2 immediately. She just turned 6 on January 1st. It's been on the right level for her. But, I think your child needs to be able to write comfortably to do Saxon 1.

My son was able to start Saxon K when he was 3. It has no writing. Just working with manipulatives and the lessons are short. The only thing that he didn't get was ordinal position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) It's just a developmental thing. I've left it alone. I know he'll get it easily when he's a little older. He loves doing "math" with mom, though.

Yes, and yes.

I think this is what TWTM recommends as well.

I start mine in Saxon 1 about the time they turn 5. I have Saxon K, but only do it when the younger ones decide they need math.

Whoops. Really? :blushing: I guess it's been a while since I've read the math rec's in WTM.:blushing: I don't currently own my own copy since I've been waiting for the newest addition to come out before buying it for myself. Everyone I know IRL uses matches the Saxon level with the grade. :001_huh: Hmm. What's up with them?

Hi Jane! I'm not really following you around today answering your inquiries. :001_smile:

I started all of my kids with Saxon 1 with no problems. You could move into Saxon 1 from any previous math experience with no problems. I have found the grade level ahead worked for all of mine except one, who needed to stay on grade level and seems less naturally math intuitive. However, I've slowed my olders down just a bit so that they are doing Alg. II in 9th. My oldest hit a wall when he went into Saxon II in 8th. We backtracked a bit, shored up the foundation, and then ended up leaving Saxon altogether when Saxon Advanced Math wasn't working. My dd does very well with Saxon and, while I don't think she'd have problems with the Adv. Math text, I've already decided to add in a year of geometry and use other pre-calc and calc texts.

All that to say, Saxon worked great in the middle grades. But some kids, not all by any means, don't do great with Saxon in the very upper grades.

HTH,

Lisa

VP's recommendation of Saxon is just one of the reasons I chose it. Here is Saxon's Placement Inventory for K-3 that may help you determine which level is a good fit for your dc.

I'm using Saxon Math K with my ds4 right now and he loves it! We started it on September 1, 2008 and will most likely completed it by the end of March. I had planned to move right into Saxon Math 1, completing 32ish or so lessons by the end of our K4 year before breaking for summer vacation, but... I've recently decided to supplement with Singapore's Earlybird Series, so I'm not sure how our schedule will look now. Our Singapore materials will arrive on Monday and then I may have a better idea.

:001_smile:. I haven't read them lately either, but if they don't recommend it then I don't know why I started my oldest with 1 when I did .

My two older kids both did Saxon one level ahead in the classical school they attended so we continued that when I brought them home. My DD is know if 7/6 in what would be her 5th grade year and is ready for Pre Algebra of some sort next year. When my youngest DS began math in k at home we started with Saxon 1. He had no prior math experience other than informal counting and some number recognition he learned playing school with his sister. He did fine and is now in Saxon 2 for 1st. Saxon 2 is more writing so sometimes for the longer number sentences we do them verbally or I write for him. We do the front of the worksheets only unless he is having trouble then we do the backs. He enjoys the daily calendar and skip counting that is done in the meeting book.
