Additions to Lightning Lit?

I am planning to use LL American) next year for my 8th grader to correlate with Notgrass Amer. History. Do I need a separate writing program as well? I've noticed that some of you use LL and CW. She's an excellent writer. Thanks for your help!

Dd will do LL American w/ the Hakim History Of Us series & CW for writing next year for 7th grade.

Is the LL not enough writing? What does the CW have that is "extra"?

Yes, I'm sure LL will require enough essay writing. Dd will do CW Maxim which begins to introduce the 5 para essay. You say your dd is a good writer -- so she can probably handle the essays required in LL. My dd won't do the lengthy essays in LL, since she will just be learning to tackle the essay.

LL will be great for literary analysis, which dd hasn't done much of yet.

As for CW, it is whole different ball a' wax. Its a skills-based program based on the progymnasmata.

Have you looked at CW at all? Its pretty nifty :)

Jackie in AR posted a writing sample from her son on the topic of Benjamin Franklin. I look forward to the day my kids can write like this. Check it out. :)

Jackie's son's essay on Ben Franklin

Her other son has a writing sample there as well. I love Jackie's blog!!

Well, then, would you recommend CW instead of LL since we will have the literature with the Notgrass history? She's an excellent fiction writer - but nothing like Jackie's son. Wow! I would love her to be able to write in that form. Is CW hard for a parent? I've heard that it's very, VERY teacher intensive. Thanks a million!

CW is awesome. We are just beginning the program and I'm truly impressed. It is teacher-intensive for me (who doesn't know one iota about teaching writing). That is a common theme w/ CW. But the results are worth it.

If you have the time, I would say try Maxim for your dd. The sequential approach is what drew me to the program. Skill by skill. Take as much time as you need on each skill level.

Kathy Weitz has cds of her Maxim class which I bought for $50. It is a class that started last Fall. My son is doing Maxim independently w/ those cds. He then post his work on the Maxim class Forum so other students doing Maxim can see the work.

Jackie has done it on her own w/o any class thus far, I believe. Aren't the results amazing? Jackie started with Aesop and it shows.

Anyway, why not just do Notgrass History/Lit and Maxim for writing next year for 8th?

Kathy would suggest you start now in Homer OB to get ready for Maxim.

What are you doing for writing for 7th?

We are doing LL 7. She's enjoyed it - she loves to read. I've had some concerns that it's not stretching her enough with her writing skills. This is the child that would dictate stories to me when she was 5 to have them typed up. She voluntarily writes stories (some 25 + pages). With 3 children (2 boys), I am not thrilled about the teacher intensive part. But, the Kathy Weitz cd's sound great! I am using Writing Tales with my boys and loving it. So, I guess I should just jump right on in and maybe do Homer this summer? Could we "breeze" through it in a summer?

Homer OB has 18 weeks or so of lessons w/ 4 weeks of Aesop which you may or may not need.

Maxim is not nearly as teacher-intensive as Homer, from what Angelina and Jackie have said. I think Maxim will take approx. 1 hour/day. Harvey Grammar is optional, but we will do it because my kids need it.

The CW message boards have a wealth of info:

As for CW moms here: SusaninSoCal, MamaLynx, JackieinAR, CajunClassical -- they are awesome!! They've done Aesop, Homer, Poetry and now Maxim & Chreia.
