mo2
My daughter will turn 7 in March, and I would like to start a SL in July. How do I know whether to choose core 1, core 2, or core 1+2? I will probably be using curricula other than SL for math, LA, etc, so I'm interested in SL for the history and read-alouds mostly.
Annie Laurie
1+2 is packed, it goes so quickly through a large period of time in history. I would recommend Core 1, then you won't miss any of those great books. You might want to post at the SL choosing forum.
sassenach
I'd go with Core 1. IMO, SL is best when you are use a core that is at least 1 level under your child's grade.

Let me demonstrate: Core 1 (7) Core 2 (8) Core 3 (9) Core 4 (10) Core 5 (11) Core 6 (12) Core 7 (13) Core 100 (14) Core 200 (15) Core 300 (16) Core 400 (17) Perfect! BTW Core 530 is lit and writing. No Bible, history or LA is included. If you have a lit major it might be nice to have, but it is not necessary otherwise. Heather
Donna T.
Definately Core 1, unless you have already covered some ancient history. Core 1 is wonderful!
Chris in VA
Core 1. Check your dd's reading level, tho, because the regular independent reads are very "gentle."
MerryAtHope
Another vote for core 1! The combo cores leave some of the best books out because it's a whirl-wind tour (6,000 plus years of history crammed into one year is a lot!). I've known people to take 1.5 years or 2 to cover Core 1+2. Merry :-)
Lovedtodeath
You might even consider core K.

StephanieF
I think that you could seriously consider core K. I am currently doing it with my 5 1/2 yr old and will repeat all the read alouds in the future as although he is enjoying them and does understand a lot of what is going on, he will get a lot more out of them when he is older. So far I have also given the read alouds to my 9 and 12 year old and they have used them as readers and read them themselves, they really enjoyed them! They are not childish books at all and the language is quite advanced. So if core K fits in with with the progression over the years, don't think that 7 yrs is too old to do the core. It may also be that your dd is able to read some of the history herself. Although my ds isn't able to do this he enjoys looking at the books himself and picking out words he understands so depending on your dd's reading ability this may be quite nice for her to do, even if it is just in her spare time. I would say that the books would fit very nicely on the bookshelf of any age child. Stephanie
thundersweet
Doing core 1 with my 7yo dd. It's a perfect fit. She understands the material and it really getting into our study of Egypt. Yesterday, I was not feeling so well so I made us all go upstairs and I set the alarm. I decided to lie down while the kids played in their rooms. Guess what they did? They turned each other into mummies. Went through all of the package of toilet paper upstairs. lol I even heard my 4yo saying something about King Tut last night. So, he's getting something from this core as well. Oh, and we are also using Hands & Heart kits to go along with the core since dd likes crafts. If you don't know about those, they are craft kits that come with everything you need in them. Someone on the SL board made a schedule that tells you when to do each craft. The ancient egypt kit and the rome/greece kit go with core 1. If you like this idea and you decide to get these kits. You need to get them now because the company is clearing their shelves because of the new law. http://handsandhearts.com/ I did pick up the Ancient Far East Kit last night (and the Middle Ages Kit for core 2 just in case they stop making these for good) because we can do some of those when we visit China in our studies.
