Cornerstone Classical
I am looking at SL Core 1+2 World History for next year with a 1st and 2nd grader. How would my day look? Can I buy the core and not the individual books? Can I opt out of buying the individual books if my local library has them? TIA Edited January 21, 2009 by Cornerstone Classical
at the beach
I am looking at SL Core 1+2 World History for next year with a 1st and 2nd grader. How would by day look? Can I buy the core and not the individual books? Can I opt out of buying the individual books if my local library has them? TIA We're using this this year. I think with the age of your kids, though, you might just be better off using Core 1. I'm assuming you mean they will be in those grades next year. Core 1/2 is very good. My dd loves the Usborne Book. :tongue_smilie: Even tho' I felt like, ugh, she loved it. The Core has some great read alouds. We are using the intermediate readers. It's not too time-consuming, either. You'll have plenty of time to do the basics. We do not use SL LA or Science. You can buy an IG and get the books used. I would say the history books, you'd need to have as some are used all year. The Bible book, too. The readers and read alouds, you could get from the library for many. You can do it cheaper than buying new. Or you could buy a whole used Core from someone. We've been happy with it so far. Best, Anita

Tohru
Keep in mind that the Sonlight numbers are NOT grade levels. The 1+2 is for ages 7 through 9, however they suggest that if it is your first Sonlight year to go with the upper age recommendation. So if your eldest is 9, then 1+2 would be a good fit. If your eldest is 8, than you might consider Sonlight Core 1 or even Core K (Intro to World Cultures). As far as how your day would look... I guess that depends upon your scheduling. My son reads all his assignments around the baby's schedule and then we do our discussions and read alouds in the afternoon when he is done with his other subjects. You don't have to buy the books, you can just buy the Core and nothing else. Also, the Sonlight website has a forum and a FS board there too. We switched to Sonlight last year and *love* it so much. Wish we had used it from the start. Good Luck! Edited January 21, 2009 by jadedone80
coffeefreak
When you ask about buying the Core, that is everything, the books and Teacher's guide. You could, theoretically, buy the Teacher's guide and piece together the books. I did that one year with K and I wouldn't do it again. It's too frustrating to get the books from the library. We're doing Core 2 right now and it's soooo nice to have the books there, when you need them, at a moments notice. REALLY REALLY nice:D If you know there's some books you wouldn't use, then I would consider purchasing books separate from the teacher's guide. So, for example, I'm going to do K with my first grader next year. I own most of the books from when I did it with my oldest daughter so I'm going to buy the IG and the books I need, not the Complete Core. Cornerstone Classical
Yeah, I don't think SL will work for us... I think my dc will be too young. I found WinterPromise, that does a World History program for younger children, called Hideaways in History, but the "boxes" have me a bit nervous! I hear it's the same as Sonlight in nature, just different books and includes the hands-on activities. A friend of mine just got her box yesterday, I'm going over there Friday to check it out:hurray:

Like one project is to make a pyramid (big enough for your children to play in). There have been some complaints that if you have to buy the boxes it gets into some $$$ (one lady said it cost her almost 300.00) just to buy the boxes she needed to make these hideaways. But my question is...will the program work if we skip some of these projects??? I guess that's another thread!:tongue_smilie:

WOW! I didn't know about that AT ALL! My friend bought AS1. If no one else answers your questions, I'll let you know next week what I think. It seems to me that, like any activity, you could just choose not to do it and it would work just fine. Lovedtodeath would know, or Siloam. They both use WP. Blessings! Dorinda ps don't you just love this time of year? All the choosing and researching:tongue_smilie:
coralloyd
I'd also choose Core K or 1 instead. We are almost done with Core K. It was perfect for my advanced dd6(almost 7), but becase of my dd4 (almost 5),we will be taking a year off of SL and doing our own thing. She enjoys the Science and History Usborne books, but the read-alouds are over her head. When dd4 turns 6 we will start Core 1. I already have most of the Core 1 books and I can tell I will not be holding my oldest back any by doing it this way. Core 1 will still be perfect for her at age 8 (Hoping it won't be too hard for younger dd),even with skipping a year. We do not like SL LA at all. However, we do use the readers. But not at the recommended grade level.
