bookmomma
I'm looking for resources to combine art study into our history study in SOTW: Middle Ages. I was thinking of looking at famous art work/people from the same time periods that we will be discussing in SOTW2 for art study. Does anyone have any ideas on where to begin? Kids will be 7 & 9 next year. Thanks,
Laura in STL
We used Artistic Pursuits for that time period. It covers artists and techniques in chronological order. It also has art projects and instruction, so I don't know if you're looking for that. I think we used both books one and two during the Middle Ages, but we already had book one from our Ancient year. We used the K-3 books, and my kids were 5 and 7.
abreakfromlife
We are (slowly) using Artistic Pursuits 2, also. That ties in perfectly with SOTW 2 and the middle ages/renaissance. For the weeks where there isn't art that goes along with it, I'm using Teach Your Child to Learn Art, which is more teaching artistic concepts like color theory, patterns, etc.. bookmomma
Thanks to both of you! I looked at Artistic Pursuits last night and was pleased, but what's the deal with book one, two, etc. Do I do just one book per year? And if so, which one ties into Middle Ages? Thanks again, I wouldn't have found it otherwise:)

LanaTron
You could also check out Harmony Fine Arts. It has art and music, too.
abreakfromlife
I had the same question...book 2 of Artistic Pursuits is what goes with the middle ages, and I was worried about starting with book 2 and not 1, but I was told it didn't matter, and it really doesn't. Each week/project is kind of a stand alone thing; it's not like it's building concepts on top of each other, so you can easily get book 2 of AP and start right in with middle ages stuff. Macrina
I have found that the Come Look With Me books (do an Amazon search) work well, though you have to thumb through to find the time period you are looking for because they are organized by subject. We started doing it first with SOTW, the chapter on Crete because one of the art books included something from that time period, with a paragraph about the unknown artist's time and discussion questions. It worked in beautifully. The books are often in the library too, but I am collecting the series because they are so nice to have on hand
