Mandarinmom
We are finishing 1st grade LA in a month. I have just purchased FLL 1/2 to supplement to whatever we had, but I see that 2nd grade is too easy for her. And though I was not too happy with K12 grammar course, we used also Voyages in English 1 workbook, and it did the trick, she is very strong with grammar, and copyright, dictation, is going very well. Can I skip 2nd grade grammar all together and go to FLL 3 instead? My daughter just turned 6 yesterday. Is it to early for 3rd grade grammar? I am sure there is somebody who already done it. The only thing we did not memorize too many poems, and I am thinking of using Pudewa's course right from the beginning of 2nd grade. Will FLL 3 go together with WWE 1? We will only be starting it now, and I can't figure if she is ready for WWE 2, probably not if we did not do WWE 1?
Cornerstone Classical
I don't know if this helps, but my advanced ds did FLL 1 K and finished FLL 2 in 1st. (finished the first week of Nov, the week of his seventh birthday). We could have went to FLL 3, he was ready academically, but then I didn't want to stretch my luck, when I thought of his emotional/physical level. He was kinda crabby with the longer poems at the end of FLL 2 that he had to memorize. But he did it in the end. I wanted him to have some copywork to improve his letter formations, and neatness. So I chose to finish out this year with R&S Grammar 2, which is perfect because it concretes everything that he learned by auditory/memorizing in FLL 1/2. No he can get nitty gritty and be engaged with pencil and paper and do exercises to see it more concrete.
Mandarinmom
She is very strong with 1st grade grammar, she also did a lot of 'help me 2 learn' grammar online, and does 3rd grade reviews online easily. She is already rolling eyes with an attitude : 'Oh, noun, oh verb, I know, I know that ... dadada, etc. That is what I am afraid, if I won't move her to something harder and challenging, she will get used that everything is easy, and when it gets harder suddenly in 3rd grade with a lot of writing and composition, she will get stuck. May be to start her with 3rd grade FLL3 and see if we need will stretch it for two years?
LadyAberlin
Well I'm doing FLL with my prek right now. We will do FLL 2 in K and I don't want to move on to FLL 3 in 1st because he loved grammar right now and I don't want to stifle that. So my plan is to move into English for the Thoughful Child vol 1 in 1st and English for the thoughful Child vol 2 in 2nd and then go back to FLL3 in 3rd. English for the thoughful child is similar to FLL. That may not answer your question though. I don't really care if it repeats a lot because I think it really helps them to remember it permanently. 5sons
a just turned 7yr old. He has a September birthday and we felt he was ready for FLL 3. He has done great. He actually really likes it, and often asks to do a lesson. We do 2 lessons a week, plus the dictation assignments plus WWE2. I will have to say this is an advanced child. He is doing RS C, Spelling power level C, and Greek level 3. He is a very advanced reader. All this to say that if YOU think your child is ready give it a try. If it ends in tears shelve it for a few months or so and try it again. My dc love the challenge. IMO no sence in holding them back because of a number. I know this goes against the flow:) I am just letting you know what works for us. My ds 8 is doing FLL 4 and loves it. Hope this helps, Kristen
Mandarinmom
Thank you all! I think I just needed some encouragement. K12 LA 1 grammar that we are using right now is so easy, it takes her less than 15 minutes for the lesson together with writing. So we end up with doing five LA lessons at a time, and this is very frustrating. And I hear from everybody who uses K12 that LA 2 is very easy even compare to LA 1, and many independent family simply skip it and go directly to LA3. But LA 3 goes in K12 right into novels and then another complaint that LA3 is very hard. She is certainly not ready for LA3 writing course and literature analysis, we are still in princesses Barbies stage, and our birthday dream was to be a real princess, and after I tried to say stupidly that it was not realistic thing to wish, lots of tears, so talking about 3rd grade novels... Something like Little house in the woods is not the subject of interest yet. But grammar course will fit. Also may be more handwriting, copying, and dictation from WWE 1 and then WWE 2? Since we are in Oregon virtual academy, we will do LA 2nd grade from April, and it is going to be a very little work again. Add Andrew Pudewa poetry. She loves poetry, strangely I never did, and still don't, so I need a real through instructions here.
Allearia
My son started FLL3 at 6 1/2 and has done great. As long as your daughter is writing well it should be OK.
