momto2Cs
I think I'm pretty well set for writing (Writing Tales 1) and reading (making my own list for next year), but I need spelling and grammar recommendations... So far we have always used words from our ETC books for spelling, but I think my ds will be ready for more in-depth spelling. I have looked at the Natural Speller and Simply Spelling - thoughts? Recommendations? Grammar-wise, we haven't done much in the way of formal grammar thus far. I was looking at GWG 3 - would that be hard to "leap" into? If we're using WT1 would we really need a seperate grammar program? Edited January 19, 2009 by momto2Cs
inashoe
I would recommend R&S English 3 - my third grader has been using this and is getting a very good grounding in grammar.
ELaurie
FLL 3 without too much difficulty, IMO. If your dc hasn't memorized poetry in the past, the poetry memorization might require a bit of practice, but it's not overwhelming (you could also skip it, if poetry memorization isn't important to you, or if you would prefer to have your dc memorize other things). I recommend getting the CD that goes with FLL 1 and 2 as well. The chants and memory songs will make it much easier for your dc to memorize lists of prepositions, helping verbs, pronouns, etc. I am using FLL 3 this year with ds 9 and I have been very happy with it. It's thorough, without too much repetition, and it doesn't too quickly. The length of lessons has been just right for ds 9, without so much writing that he finds them taxing. FLL 3 also includes lessons about using the dictionary and writing letters. These lessons are optional.
laughing lioness
A friend is teaching our littles Shurly Grammar during co=op. I am so impressed! We are also using the Grammar Cathechism from Drew Campbell's "Living Memory," and we have the Grammar Songs CD that I play a couple of times a week. LaxMom
We use Growing With Grammar (3) and Spelling Power and like both.
Cornerstone Classical
I would recommend R&S English 3 - my third grader has been using this and is getting a very good grounding in grammar. :iagree: If your are looking for non-religious curriculum, I would do FLL3. momtolgd
We are using GWG 3 and love it. It would be just fine to "jump into." GWG is a favorite of both of my kids. For spelling, we haven't started it yet but will use Spelling Power after finishing ETC.
Haiku
We are planning to start Sheldon's Primary Language Lessons in second grade. You could certainly start it in third grade. Bonus! It's free! Tara

I didn't use FLL1 or 2 with him and barely cover basics of nouns, verbs, etc in 2nd grade, and he is doing awesome! I HIGHLY recommend this program. As far as spelling, we are using Natural Speller and I'm very pleased. It only takes a few minutes a day (if that) to prepare for the weeks lessons. You can decide which activities you want your dc to do (which is nice b/c a lot of other spelling programs require a lot of writing--which my ds hates--so I can tailor our own lessons to what he can do). He has been very successful with this spelling program. Just know that it is not a workbook.

BryRon
Even though it is touted as a "gifted" LA program, I believe this is good stuff for everyone. I enjoy teaching my daughter about adjectives, adverbs, etc...it is easy and fun.
Lovedtodeath
The author of WT recommends no grammar in addition to her program, or GWG if you want to add something. I like the spelling program I am using. It is similar to AAS without all of the bells and whistles.
coffeefreak
I would recommend R&S English 3 - my third grader has been using this and is getting a very good grounding in grammar. This or A Beka Language 3 (another one of SWB recommendations) is also good. And it's easy peasy (rice and cheesy):001_rolleyes: Dorinda
Woodland_Mom
Spelling Plus or The Phonetic Zoo would be other options. We will use phonetic zoo for 4th grade. We tried it for 3rd, but it was a little too difficult for my ds(8). At the beginning of 3rd grade his spelling skills were quite lacking. I then switched to Spelling Plus and have watched his spelling abilities really improve. IMO, FLL 3 would probably fit nicely with Writing Tales.
