Kisa in CA
I have a 9 year old 4th grader who will be seeing a living presentation from a Revolutionary war soldier on March 3rd. We have not done a lot of American history, so I need a good resource to go over with him in the next few weeks. Since I don't have much time, it needs to be on the shorter side and interesting. He needs to know about: German Hessians, Continental Congress, The battle of Princeton, the battle of Trenton, British occupation of NY and Philadelphia, King George III. etc. THANKS! Soph the vet
A Child's Story of America includes all of American History but there is a lot of good short chapters on the Revolutionary War. (McHugh). Haym Solomon, Liberty's Son (Milgrim) included a lot about the occupation of NY and PHilly. And a longer but wonderful historical fiction is Johnny Tremain (Forbes). Shelly in VA
My ds LOVED Johnny Tremain at that age. There is a short book called "George vs. George" by Schanzer that is very good, with info on both perspectives of the Revolutionary War. You could also look for Jean Fritz books from that time period. HTH!
Riverfront Headmistress
Johnny Tremain
Mom2boys
Liberty or Death by Betsy Maestro is good. Cheryl Harness has written a number of books about that time period too.
Mama Lynx
Another vote for Johnny Tremain.
Hoggirl
I haven't used this particular title, but we did use The Civil War for Kids, and I thought it was excellent. It kind of alternated chapters between battle stuff and life and times stuff (how the soldiers lived, what it was like for the women at home, etc.). The coverage of the battles was pretty thorough. Like I said, I haven't used the Revolutionary War one, but if it is as good as the Civil War one, it might be a match!
Kisa in CA
I ordered the American Revolution for kids from my library and pulled Johnny Tremain off my shelf! Now I'm off to read since it's a good size book and we don't have much time.... Blessings, Kisa PS - more suggestions are welcome
ELaurie
My fourth grade teacher read this book aloud to us, and we were all a puddle of tears by the end - it's still a favorite of mine, and I can't wait to read it to my dc : ) I have fond memories of her reading aloud to us every day after lunch . . .
