Shenan
With the bitter cold temps they are predicting for tomorrow and Fri, I thought I would pack dh some hot liquids in his lunch. I have never (sad, I know) filled a thermos with HOT liquids before and my poor dh is working at a job site where he doesn't have access to restaurants/convenience stores. (which is great for the budget, btw ;) ). Here is my dilemma. I go to bed around 11 pm at night. Dh wakes at 3 am to go to work. If I make it around 11 pm will the liquids still be warm by 6-8 am when he's working in the bitter temps? PS- Asking/requesting him to fill his thermos with hot liquid at 3 am is NOT an option! The entire house nearly wakes with his 10 minute rise, shine and departure every morning. If he were to make the hot liquids, EVERYONE would be awake at 3 am. That's not my general idea of a good start to the day.:D TIA!
PamJH
I've an old Stanley (Aladdin) thermos that I filled with coffee at 2:15 p.m. today. It was still quite warm at 10 p.m., but then I wasn't outside. I would think that with a good thermos, you could keep something hot in the bitter cold at least a couple of hours. If he can keep the thermos out of the wind, wrapped in a blanket or something, it might do even better. I hope that helps. Pam

LMA
Fill the thermos first with boiling water from a kettle and let it sit for a at least 5 minutes. Then dump the water and add your food. The food will keep pretty warm all day. I used to do this for my husband's Starbucks coffee that he would take in a thermos for the day at the office and he was pretty pleased with the warmth. (Now he works from home so I don't fill the thermos anymore).
