Elohcin
I am starting a book club with some fellow moms of mine. I am looking at all types of books-fiction and non, childrens and adult, hard and easy, parenting, travel, etc.. There is a mix of homeschoolers/not in our group. What do you think would be a good opening book for our club? I don't have any idea where to start. I haven't ever done one of these before. Thanks for all you ideas. plansrme
due to some work we're having done on our house, but let me see what I can think of (and give your post a bump): 1. Girl Meets God by Lauren Winner, about her conversion from Orthodox Judaism to Christianity. If the crowd is Christian, this is a good one. 2. A Thousand Splendid Suns, fabulous, fabulous book, though many may have read this one already. Wonderful women's issues, fiction but rings very true. Cannot recommend it highly enough. 3. Light nonfiction: God Grew Tired of Us. It's a serious story about one of the Lost Boys of Sudan but an easy read. It is very different from the movie version. Guest dash916
My favorite books of 2008 were Gone With the Wind and Keeping the House: A Novel by Ellen Baker. I think they'd both make great book club books.
4kidsandcounting
Last year I was in a book with a few ladies and we read "When I Don't Desire God" by John Piper and I loved it so much, I am leading a group through it. It is amazing!
Lady Q
Have you considered that maybe your scope is too broad? All the book clubs I've been in or heard about have a theme to guide the selection of books. Frex, two of my friends and I are meeting monthly to discuss books of Christian theology, no fluff allowed. It's been wonderful so far, and feels more cohesive than if we had just picked books from a bunch of random genres. Just a thought. :)
alabasterflask
I'm in my third year of leading a women's book club at church - we have approx. 10 books a year and choose one on each of 10 topics - that works really well for us. Our first book was The Shaping of a Christain Family by Elisabeth Elliot. Stepping Heavenward was a really good choice too. We also did When I Don't Desire God by John Piper. If you are interested take a peek at our blog - nobody uses is so it's out of date ;) but I did post all of our past selections at the begining of this year. I've given this topic alot of thought so if you have any questions please email me - I'd be happy to help if I can. alabaster.jar@comcast.net
