The Froggy Books... uhgggg!

Recommended Posts

for me, it's the Froggy Books... uhgggg!

My son picked 5 of these books up at the library. He now says they are his favorites. :ack2:

I just got up and my son says "Mommy? After breakfast will you please read me my favorite book, Froggy's First Christmas?"

sure. but not on an empty stomach! :ack2:

Maybe it is just me. I normally love reading to my kids.

What memories! You just brought forward traumatic memories that I thought were deeply buried!! Our daughter, who turns 12 in a few weeks, LOVED those books. After the first dozen readings, we couldn't stand them, so it got to the point of us asking her which book she wanted to be read at bedtime. If it was a Froggy book, dh and I would look at each other, trying to 'out wait' the other while trying not to be obvious to dd.

Froggy Gets Ready...ahh....what a walk down memory lane. "Froggyy......what"? (runs screaming from the room!) :tongue_smilie:

btdt. My mother gave a packaged book set that included the first Froggy book. When she read the book, she hated it. My dc loved, loved, loved that book. Thankfully, we've not seen all 5 of them. But I have read them aloud. Just not nearly as often as they would have liked. The book is long gone.

But the book I really hated reading aloud is Robinson Crusoe unabridged. Dd LOVES it, so I finally ordered it on CD.

Yeah. My daughter loves the Froggy books too. Sigh.

I don't hate them. They're not the most annoying books out there. I don't mind reading them occassionally. It's the constant, constant wanting to read over and over and over that I find annoying.

You have my sympathy.

What is it about these books that the kids love so much? In all honesty, I can not figure it out! The illustrations are nothing great, the story lines are not particularly clever... the one thing where I can see the draw is the Frooooogggggyyy - Whhhhaaaat exchange.

Yes, the Froooooooooggggggyyyyy--Whhhhaaaat parts were my dc's favourite parts. And they liked the drawings. But I don't miss the book, not even a little bit.

Oh, my, I didn't realize there was a plethora of those books! My mom gave us one when Emma was little - Froggy takes a bath - I think it even came with soap or something. What a horrible book. Thankfully we never found more of them and she didn't grow terribly attached to that one. It's long gone. I will pray A LOT that no one gives any to the Snort!

I thought it was me!

Oh, after the second or third time through, how I despised reading those books, especially the flop flop flop part every time he walked....

It reminds me of when I was about three and my favorite book was about an Itty-Bitty-Robin. Whenever I hauled it out of the bookcase and headed for my mother's lap, I could see her entire body tense up and a look of utter despair on her face. One day it simply disappeared and was lost forever (I'm thinking it disappeared into the garbage can after we hit about the 1,000th reading and my mother simply couldn't take it anymore!).

oh no! I can't believe you remember that! I really need to watch how I respond to things like that.

In the library, my daughter picked up about 5 board books and as I was checking them out, I noticed they were ones she picked out before and I said, "Lauren - please show me the books before we head to check out, ok?" and she just gave me this dejected look and said, "why, don't you like the books I picked out? are they not good?"

I felt so bad, I said, no they are fine! I just am interested in seeing what you picked out! :001_huh: (which is technically true and I don't like it when we go to the library and it's only MY CHOICE of books, I want them to look for things that interest them) The Froggy books are a nightmare. I don't think I can fake excitement for them!

No tomatoes please! We like the Froggy books. I like to ham them up - esp. all the sound effects. But having said that, neither of my children have been the 'read the same book every day' type of children. We may read a book a second time after a couple of months but that is as frequent as it gets. So maybe that's a huge reason why they don't bug me!

The books are sure popular so I'm guessing you two are not alone!

One of the first froggy books I read to them had Froggy visiting the doctor. The doctor comes at him with a shot then... ... ... the dr. says "Just Kidding!" :001_huh: So after that, the froggy books didn't really stand a chance.

We didn't have froggy, but there were one or two of my daughter's favorites that I would hide for days at a time to give myself a break from them.

My son likes to just look and have you say an occasional word about something on the page, that's a lot less mind-numbing that reading the same 10 lines over and over and over again.

My husband wouldn't even play, he'd just do his own "short version" of any book he didn't like or that was too long and painful, it drove my daughter crazy, she knew she was being cheated.

No tomatoes. I didn't hate them at first, and hammed them up to the hilt. I was the repetition that drove me to dislike them. They're not great lit, but they got old for me very quickly.

Here's another beauty:

Froggy is learning how to ride a bike and his dad says "I won't let go" and then on the next page, "Dad let go!" Froggy falls and his dad says: "let's try it again, I won't let go!" Next line: "His dad let go!"

Nice.

I'm sure some people find that effective but my son is currently learning how to ride a bike and something I tell him every time is "I won't let go!" and I don't.
