klmama
I haven't followed the situation, but now that it looks like it's going to continue for awhile, I guess I'd better pay attention, both for my own knowledge and so I can explain it to the dc. Any suggestions?
Starr
The BBC, New York Times, and there is always the Al Jazeer (spelling?) web site and the Jerusalem Post. I think I read a summary on the BBC website recently.

Soph the vet
I think going back and taking a look at the whole history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is extremely educational and very helpful when viewing current events. I did this a couple of years ago and it is really interesting. I would suggest beginning at least as far back as the late 19th century. If you are interested in what I found just pm me. LisaNY
I agree w/Soph the Vet's suggestion. I would stay away from sites like Al-Jazeera, as they are extremely biased, at best. Here is one site that attempts to summarize the history of the Arab/Israeli conflict.

stripe
I would stay away from sites like Al-Jazeera, as they are extremely biased, at best. Bias is in the eye of the beholder. Some people think it's a neutral statement to say that the combined death toll is 900 people. Others think that is outrageous propaganda. It can be beneficial to understand the perspective of a group of people that is generally treated as sub-human.

Additionally, I believe that Al Jazeera is the only news organization currently in the area. No-one else is physically in the area.
LisaNY
Sort of makes you wonder why that is, doesn't it? No matter what your view is, also, to drop leaflets informing civilians to leave the area and go to such and such place, then that place gets intentionally bombed...no wonder the battles keep raging on. You actually believe that???? I guess if Al-Jazeera is your news source, then it comes as no surprise.

From what I have read the Israelis are dropping leaflets and sending text-messages to warn Palestinian civilians to stay away from certain areas, not sending them to certain areas. It is Hamas that is hiding behind civilians by shooting rockets from hospitals, schools, and the like. War is hell and there will always be civilian casualties, tragically, but to hide behind your own people while committing terrorist activity is nothing but pure cowardice and that is what Hamas is: terrorist cowards. My heart breaks for the Palestinian people but not for their terrorist leaders.

Hmmm....I recently read this online and then watched the video. Regardless of politics and religion, any group that used these tactics to further their cause would be suspect in my mind. http://frontpagemagazine.com/Articles/Read.aspx?GUID=27DDCD06-E94A-45AE-B3FD-B28CE98AB324
Nicole M
For a truly lovely and touching account of an Arab Palestinian's story, I would recommend the book Blood Brothers by Elias Chacour: http://www.amazon.com/Blood-Brothers-Elias-Chacour/dp/0800793218/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231942239&sr=8-

I've been looking for a book to read like this but had no idea what to get. If you think it's bad now just wait until they get their Palestine... the people in Gaza have no where to go and the Palestinians sure won't have anywhere to go once the borders of Palestine are settled. That's why Hamas is protesting. Based on my research, I believe they are primarily protesting the formation of Palestine because they believe it will be a trap. I'm not endorsing their tactics, just saying that's the motivation. Praying for everyone involved on all sides. Edited January 14, 2009 by Donna T.
