Brigitte
Or, can someone tell me if there is a real difference between the 1st Generation and the new ones? I want to buy one today, but I want to make sure the $80 savings is worth it. TIA!
Miss Peregrine
One difference is the built in speaker. You can plug in earbuds but there is no need. I am not about other differences. DS was going to buy a refurbished one but when he finally saved the money, they had none left.:001_smile:

So the 1st Generation does not have the built in speaker? That is a deal breaker. :(
TraceyS/FL
Nope, no built in speaker. That aside, i haven't bought a refurb Touch, but would. I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything from the Apple Refurb store. The other big thing i can think of at the moment is that the 1st gen doesn't work with the Nike+ thing - the 2nd gen has it built in, but the first doesn't. There probably won't be an upgrade to make the 1st work with it either.
Miss Peregrine
One other thing to consider-- there is no dock/speaker system(that we have found) that will work with the 2g. You can plug it in with an aux cable but then you can't utilize the charging function.:glare:

Some things just won't charge (i gather they were told to use both? i read about it in the iLounge 2009 iPod buyers guide in December). Our Phillips DVD player with iPod dock charges our 3g Nano's, i haven't tried my small speakers yet. I highly recommend checking out the buyers guide - they have a number of things that work and some that don't (they tell you about them too). And, their forums normally have info on what may or may not work! http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/download-now-our-2009-ipod-iphone-buyers-guide/
