More CW questions...

I'm needing some help on placing my dc in the CW series. I did look at the web- site, but I need a little more input. I was hoping to start this in the fall so I can prepare in the summer for it. I also wanted to put my 4th and 5th grader together. They are both in WWE right now and are both pretty good writers. So should I start them both in Aesop A since they are not familiar with the CW method, or should I move them to Aesop B? I was really hoping to start with A just because I'm one of those people who like to start in the beginning of everything, but I don't want it to be too easy. Also, ds13, a very reluctant writer, will hopefully be starting in the fall as well. I'm assuming that The Older beginners series would be the best start for him, right? He will be in 8th next year, but his writing is definitely not at that level. He has some LD's so I usually have to place him lower in levels to meet his needs. Thanks for any input on this. I can't get my mind off this for some weird reason so I appreciate it!:)

I'd definitely try your older in Older Beginners.

I'm not sure about your younger two, though. The website has a forum where you can ask, and Lene or Kathy will advise you as to which level to start. They also have guidelines up for starting at different ages.

I'm inclined to start with Aesop A and say go through it at your own pace, completing it in half the time if it's very easy for them. You have to weigh the cost of the books, though, if that is an issue for you.

I started my reluctant writer 4th grader in A, and that was a good fit for him.

Thanks so much! I was starting to become afraid that I wouldn't get a response on Saturday! So I can call CW,and they will advise me on how to place the younger two?

I'm not sure where you should start, but I wanted to give you the CW forum link. They are VERY responsive. You could use the Aesop core and create your own plan so that you can go at your kids' pace. I'm not familiar with WWE, so I'm not sure how much overlap there is between them. We did Aesop on our own and found it to be fairly simple. We are using Homer now and it is quite a step up from Aesop. I love it though.

I see two options.

The CW student worksheets are not written to accommodate 8 and 7yo's, but the core books demonstrate how you can fold them in. I see you options as either getting Aesop A and having the younger two follow along. You would either pick an easier model and work on the same skills, or use the smaller piece that CW chooses for dictation for the younger kids. They might also need more time in each of the different stages, where your 10yo could move up....so you might have to do some compromising there.

The second option would be to use Writing Tales for your younger two, which is scripted and uses models that are friendlier to younger children. They also have more material (Aseop A is 18 weeks and Aesop B is 18 weeks where WT 1 is a year and WT 2 is a year). Then you can move them over to CW Homer, or if they are still a little young for Homer you could have them review with CW Aesop B first.

I started my older sons in 4th & 5th grade with CW Aesop B. Up to that point, they had only done a few books from the Imitation in Writing series. I decided to work through the CW series with both boys at the same time. I used the CW grade level suggestions based on the grade of my middle son who was in 4th grade at the time. So far this has worked very well for us. My middle son was not overwhelmed with CW, but the program still challenged my older son who was in 5th grade at the time.
