Bokons
I would like to know what the differences are between the ones by Christine Miller and the ones by Guerber. Are they suitable for grades 8 and 9? If you are using these books with your dc, how are you using them? Thanks.
Julieofsardis
The Story of the Greeks and The Story of the Romans are basically the same text as the original. The difference is in some preface notes, and some study helps. There are books lists and just a new look. Basically just a republished book. There are other titles that have been rewritten by combining some of the Guerber books with another author (can't remember). Then the lastest addition is the The Story of the Ancients. This book is authored by Miller in a style similar to Guerber. All of this info is on the website Nothingnewpress.com. Some of them have been edited for racial slurs, I believe. I would say they would be fine for 8th and 9th grader, especially if they were just used as a spine. Ideal for middle schoolers IMHO, but originally written as an elementary text for history. We used them in the 6th grade as a spine for history, with lots of other resources added. I think the difference in that and using them for an 8th or 9th grader would be in the amount of extra research on some of the topics and writing projects that are connected with them. They are great books! The one about ancients has a very Christian flavor, while the originals have a Christian overtone.

profmom
We used Story of the Ancient World last year and really liked it! In the back, there are a manageable amount of additional book recommendations per chapter. It takes you through the Old Testament in chronological order and, additionally, covers the history of the other cultures as they come into contact with Israel. You need to know that it focuses on Israel, but it does cover more history than just reading the Bible alone, especially when it goes into the other cultures. I found it very interesting, for example, to study the Assyrians and have a greater understanding of why Jonah didn't want to go to Ninevah. We used this along with Victor Journey through the Bible. siloam
Colleen, I have Story of the Great Republic and Story of the Thirteen Colonies. Inside she states how she updated them. Mostly the racial slurs like "negroes," "red skins," and the like were replaced. She details all other changes made as well. Heather
