StephanieF
We have just started back and as expected it is a bit painful! We use Getty Dubay and are on level C (printing). Is it too much to expect a page of the book every day? It seems to be taking an age, not the actual writing but the looking around, having a scratch etc lol! He doesn't do much other writing (copywork from WWE twice a week) and a little in LLATL. I don't see how he could be doing much less! Or perhaps I need to be sitting with him when he does it rather than cooking (3 feet away). I had hoped he could be slightly more independent. He is 5 1/2 yrs old and before you all say I am expecting too much, unfortunately in school over here in the UK he would be writing stories (not necessarily good I know) and since he will be going to school eventually I can't afford for him to be behind. Will his concentration suddenly improve? Stephanie

FO4UR
I give my 5yo his penmanship page to complete after breakfast and before he can play;) He gets it done LOL!
StephanieF
mmm maybe I need to move it around then and do the things he does with me first and the things he has to do on his own before playtime  Stephanie
KAM
My 5 yo is only on Level A so he does a page 4 days a week. My 8 yo is on Level C- those pages are longer so I ask her to do 3 lines a day. Agree with the having something more fun they can do right after- my 5 yo is much more ambitious getting his done if it's right before snack or playing a math game. Gwenny
I'd like to know the answer to this too! I can't get my daughter (5.5yrs) to even do a page/day (4 days/wk). You would think I was torturing her. She screams and throws herself on the floor - it's not pretty! It doesn't seem unreasonable to just write 1 short sentence or 1/2 the capital letters, but she hates it. The coordination is there and her writing is very precise (especially since she erases each letter several times). I just wish I knew how to get her to do it happily! I still stand there with my 6 1/2 yr and 8 1/2 yr olds. My younger son actually has an easier time with writing and will copy several sentences, even pages of words, etc. While my oldest whines when he writes a few words or a four-word sentence. But, the younger one has better coordination and he's an excellent drawer, while my oldest has poor coordination. It sounds bad--but I got him (8 yr old) a nintendo ds. Most of the games you play with a stylus on the screen, so it improves his hand-eye coordination (okay, it's bribery to work on strengthening his hand muscles), and it has helped immensely--not that I'm suggesting it. That's just what I did.
inashoe
We use Getty Dubai. I love it, and their writing is so very neat and legible. Level C starts with cursive on page 38. If you are doing a page a day, then in under two months he will be starting with cursive. Do you think he will be ready then ? ds6 is part way through Level C, and I can believe that a child with good fine motor skills could be there, but not all kids have the co ord at that age. I only have ds6 do half a page a day, that gives him just a little bit more time to develop before starting with cursive. The program is meant to take a year per Level, so there is no need to rush and move onto the next Level until a child is ready.
StephanieF
You are right, he won't be ready for cursive when he reaches it in the book, I thought about that. I thought that I'd do the extra sheets they sell (blackline masters) at that point as I don't really want him to start cursive until he is about 6.5 or 7yrs. I was just thinking that a page a day is a good way of getting him to write something. Maybe I'll reduce it to half a page a day and just make sure he writes something else everyday in another context, also that way it is split up. inashoe
Do you use WWE ? In a way it gives extra handwriting practice. For the copy work, two short sentences are printed out, and then the child copies this - the lines are given on the page. Since your son is on Level C then he will manage this quite easily. I have just found out that some kids do only one of the two sentences, one is shorter and one is longer. I have my ds6 doing both before I found this out, and will continue with both, he is quite capable. I am using WWE 1 with ds6, even though he is capable of the copywork in WWE 2 - as WWE 1 also includes practice in narration. WWE 2 starts off with dictation. StephanieF
Yes I do have WWE and he loves that. I was going to drop it in favour of LLATL but I think that we can easily do both-good idea! Stephanie
