Kelley
I thought that I would take advantage of getting new puppies:lol: and have a unit study. Is there a unit study that is appropriate for both a 3rd grader and 8th grader? Thanks! Kelley
Chris in VA
I don't know of any that would combine those ages, but maybe the One Week Off studies would be good. Rainbow Resources has them. If you wanted something long term, I'd consider the one based on Anne of Green Gables. Are you saying you want something easy to implement, since you will be busy with puppies? I personally don't see unit studies as easy to plan and implement at all.
vettechmomof2
What about a dog lapbook through Live and Learn or Curr click? You could even make it more scrapbook type with pictures of the puppies. What about 4-H. They have dog programs for those ages and work on training, care, breeds, etc of dogs. Could be a lot of fun for your children. My daughter is in her 2nd year of her dog 4-H project, we all love it. Enjoy the puppies, Allene
Chels~
Here are some free reading units about dogs that seem pretty good: http://www.mce.k12tn.net/dogs/index.htm

Laura Corin
How about a mini-study on China, where Shi-tzus come from? I have some books on an Amazon list - nothing specifically dog-related, but ask me if you need a link. The pronunciation (it means 'lion', as in 'lion dog') is 'shr' (like the first bit of 'Shrek' before the 'e' kicks in) and 'dz' as in the 'ds' sound in 'Ed's in the garage.' Best wishes Laura
Chris in VA
Ok, I see what you want (I :Dfeel stupid, now...). How fun--Perhaps you could design your own? You know--Use math to find out how much "Alpo" to feed, based on their weight. Do a geography lesson on where they come from, and do a one of those gene grid things to figure out the breeding part--what's dominant, what's recessive, how do the breeders know what characteristics will come thru in a crossbred dog, etc. Write a story about a new puppy's experience from that puppy's point of view. Research some names and origins to find the perfect name ("Arthur means 'noble'."). Make some organic dog biscuits, and double the recipe for another math experience. That sort of thing. Mallory
You might look at 4-H books. I happen to think these are vastly under used by homeschoolers. ;) 4-H has great books. They have great mixes of hands-on, worksheet, report, and field trip ideas, ect. You can order them online- most are around $3.00 each. BUT many counties give them away for free if you go into the extension office. You sure don't have to be registered to order them online, I am not sure about your particular extension office.
