Melissa in CA
Have you checked the WP forums? I have heard that some of the topics discussed and read about in the books are a bit advanced for the younger child and that CATW is better suited for 4-6 grades. I have also heard that it is not one of WP's best programs. Just rumor...no experience on my part. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will pop in. I didn't find any chatter and I didn't post. I'm weird about posting on other boards. Is that loyalty or what?! Anyone? Anyone?
Karen in WA
I am using this with older kids this year. My kids are 8th and 10th grade, so we are modifying quite a bit. This is my second time using WP, the first we did Quest for the Middle Ages and loved it. CATW has been okay, but not as good as I had hoped. I think it would be perfect for 5th-7th grade as written. Personally, I would not use it with a first grader. WP does have other programs that are better suited for that age. When my kids were that age, we did Five in a Row and really liked it. If you have any specific questions, let me know. I will do my best to answer. Karen in WA
MrsMe
I have not used this, but I'm on the other board alot and was there when it came out. From what I take from the conversations, it's better suited for an older age. Some of the material is a bit grim and with the prayer journal there's plenty of writing. I just know that most who bought it for the younger level which was supposed to be 2-4th, it's better suited for even older than that. coffeefreak
Thanks guys! I guess it's back to Galloping the Globe for us. I really like it, I was just intrigued by the idea of having all the days pre-planned for me:) Thanks for your help!

I really like it, I was just intrigued by the idea of having all the days pre-planned for me:)Thanks for your help! That is another thing about CAW, it doesn't have all the links and such laid out for you like their other programs, they just give you ideas of what to search on to find sites, or so I am told. Of all the programs WP has produced this is the one people are most often disappointed with. On another note AW is arranged according to habitat, and some people have done that with GTG. I actually have a schedule someone put together of how to combine the two. Heather
Diane in NH
Anyone use this? Likes/Dislikes? Good for first grade?:bigear: We used it, and we did get a lot out of it. Be aware that it does get into a lot of heavy material! It talks about things like child labor, and it definitely makes you realize how well we have things here. Still many of the weekly celebrations with food were a hit for us! One of the books that comes with it, Material World, is also very good. It shows what a typical family has from different parts of the world.

Do you think it satisfies Social Studies on its own, or would I need GTG too? Thanks Heather! Dorinda
coffeefreak
I wanted to add, I'm looking at WP because I don't think my dd will be ready for Core 1 at SL. While I love GG, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it with the youngest while oldest is doing Core 3. I'm afraid I might go a little crazy with the difference in scheduling. I did Core K years ago with my oldest and didn't care for it, and we're using a lot of the P4/5 books this year:confused:. I've lurked on the Sonlight choosing boards, but I probably need to post:tongue_smilie: Thanks for the help! Dorinda
SnowWhite
I would do Animals and their Worlds instead of Children Around the World with a first grader. I did it last year (the combined PreK-1st and 2nd and up set) with a first grader and really loved it. We are returning to it for a lighter go-through with a five year old next year. All my kids liked AW, the one caution I would have, especially given the age of your kids, is you might need to just read the opening paragraph of the Animal Encyclopedia. It is a pretty meaty book, and my dc quickly found it too detailed, so even through I had a 3rd/4th grader at the time I still just read the opening paragraph. I just had her also do Hands of a Child Habitat lapbooks as well. By the way that is when I went to WP, at Core 3. Actually I planned to do both Core 3 and AS 1, but then I got AS 1 first and my oldest decided it looked like a lot more fun than Core 3, so I dropped doing both and did both AW and AS 1.
