Can someone compare History Odyssey & SOTW for me? (and a few sciences too)

On Pandia Press' website there are sample lessons of their history curriculum, History Odyssey, which follows a 4-year cycle like SOTW but they use SOTW as *part* of their lesson. I'm looking at level 1 of it now, but am intrigued that they offer a more difficult level 2 for the 2nd time you go through the cycle and level 3 for the 3rd (although it appears levels 2 and 3 are works in progress, but I'm guessing).

My question is this: Am I missing much by using only SOTW + SOTW's AG vs. HO? Which is more thorough? I see that HO doesn't do SOTW's chapters in order... does HO have things out of order chronologically? Can anyone give a general comparison?

While I'm at it, I've been reading up on Earth & Space science curriculums for next year. Can anyone compare or just shed some light on the following for me:

R.E.A.L. Science Earth & Space

Christian Kids Explore Earth & Space

Apologia Exploring Creation w/ Astronomy (and would there be time in the same school year to cram in earth science w/ this?)

Does RS4K or the God's Design for... series make anything for Earth/Space science?

Thanks so much! The people on this forum have been more of a help to me for recommendations, advice, and help than anything else!

This is mainly a bump because I haven't used any of these programs personally. I do have a couple of good friends who have really enjoyed the R.E.A.L. science series this past year. I'm planning to use their Earth Science next year with my 2nd grader.

I feel that SOTW with the AG is good, so I haven't really considered using HO for the 1st cycle. However, I am looking at it for the logic stage (year after next for my oldest!). It would be interesting to hear from those who have used HO!

I can comment on the history a bit. I have not used Level 1 but am currently using Level 2 and plan on Level 3. What I understand Level 1 to be is more chronological in terms of geography. It takes the SOTW chapters and rearranges them so they fit by regions keeping the history in order that way. They also add the History Pocket books which some kids enjoy and some don't.

Personally for grammar stage, I prefer the AG with SOTW over HO. You are not missing anything by not doing the Level 1 guides. From what I have read on the website Level 2 builds in difficulty and amount of work but you can generally jump in any time. The level 3 guides are more dependent on the previous levels so you want to start with Ancients.

Okay, I'll chime in on the science part partially.

First, God's Design for . . series does have a three-book set for Earth/Space. http://www.answersingenesis.org/PublicStore/product/Gods-Design-for-Heaven-and-Earth-3-textbook-set,5456,191.aspx

Our Planet Earth, Our Universe, and Our Weather and Water

I haven't seen these in person or used them, so I can't tell you what they are like. We are planning on using the God's Design for Chemistry for Fall '09.

We are using Apologia's Astronomy text currently and I scheduled it to get through it in 18 weeks or so. We do science twice per week and don't add in many extra books and sometimes we skip a project if it isn't an experiment, especially if it involves a lot of writing. We are on track to finish it in a couple more weeks and go onto my own strange earth science curriculum (library-book based). So, I think it is doable. However, if you like to linger on some things, you might not have time to fit in Earth Science + Astronomy. Depends on how often you "do" science and how interested your kids get in certain things - like planets or stars or whatever.

Good luck!
