peachskittles
So we are coming up on one full year of NO work for either of us....Even McDonalds around here won't hire us (they prefer to hire teenagers around here apparently)...We still have 3 months of unemployment but this isn't living...We apply to, well, everywhere and not one call...The times we call in regards to our application we've received two responses...The first is "If we have an opening, we will call you." The other is "You didn't meet our qualifications." or something around that line....I had a very bad experience at a temp agency around here as well, but we even have applications with like three different agencies...There are just no jobs right now....This economy sucks... My SO decided to look into Iowa...He lived there most of his life and has family out there...(They are pretty much not a factor in this though...They will not help, not one bit...) He's already found a job that he could almost guarantee he could get (but we aren't too optimistic for obvious reasons)...There are more availabilites out there....After talking to my sister, she told me he shouldn't wait until he has money saved up (which honestly wouldn't be much) and just apply (not to just that one job but all openings he's found)....If he gets it, figure out how to make it happen... While this sounds like an amazing idea, we are broke...Seriously and totally broke and making this happen would mean downsizing this place majorly (which honestly is ok with me) and moving on very, very little money...This means getting a storage unit here for whatever stuff is left and moving into a hotel/motel for a month or two....Of course, the only way we would move is if he had a guaranteed job...I realize we *might* have to drive out there for an interview (more money) but a job is just so enticing LOL.... My sister makes sense...Apply and see what happens...Things will fall into place...Then again, what if something happens to open here....But we've only got 3 months...That isn't a lot of time....I remember at the beginning of this we said, "We've got 6months...Something will come along..." Yea, right...Also, I panic at the thought of living in a hotel/motel while my SO works isn't so enticing either...There is no way we can separate either (he goes first and me second with the boys)...We are on a month by month lease so no worries about breaking a lease... What point of view am I missing? I realize this is all disjointed and messed up but that's just my way of thinking right now...I appreciate any advice anyone can give me...I've got all the online applications ready to fill out but I keep second guessing everything...I know there is a chance that this won't work out but I'm trying to optimistic...At least a little bit...Something has gotta be better than this situation we are in now... Thanks y'all...Y'all have given such great advice to others on here that I hope someone can help with some advice for me...:)

Renee in NC
How would you afford the storage unit and the motel if you don't have any money? Wouldn't a motel cost more than rent (or do you own?) Have you priced a UHaul to where you might move?
Aurelia
I would say go ahead and fill out the applications. Worst case scenario would be that he has to turn the job down if it is offered, or he doesn't get it and you stay where you are. Keep applying where you are, too. You will never know if you don't take the chance.
peachskittles
How would you afford the storage unit and the motel if you don't have any money? Wouldn't a motel cost more than rent (or do you own?) Have you priced a UHaul to where you might move? I have looked at each of these...Storage unit is $70 each month (we'd only need a smaller one), first month free...Motel does cost a bit more (my sister is currently on the road with her baby's father and they stay in hotels/motels for his job) but I'd have enough saved to make it a month...If he had a guaranteed job with guaranteed income, it'd be possible...Now U-haul is a joke ($700) but Budget is like $300 to rent a truck there, which we could make possible after a few months of working to come back and get the rest of our stuff... lmrich
Apply for the jobs and see what happens. If you don't ask, you can not receive.
elegantlion
The other factor is what if he gets the job and for some reason you can't go with him. Home, saving for moving truck, etc. Are you 1. prepared to live apart for a period of time. 2. know that running two households can get very expensive. Dh and I lived apart for seven months before we moved, it was expensive and took a toll on our relationship.
Karen sn
No advice really. Just commiserating. Did you know that federal unemployment kicks in after your current runs out? That's what we're "living on" now. We've also been homeless since or baby was 4 weeks old (3 months ago!). All our stuff is in storage. We've been here and there with various friends and family. And while it has MAJORLY SUCKED, I do know who we can count on - and I will remember who was there for us and who wasn't in this most crucial, tender point in our lives. And let me tell ya....It ain't the folks with money who ran to our aide. It's the poor helping the poor. We JUST got jobs in another state. My boyfriend will be working Mon - Fri and I will work Sat&Sun. I can't wait. We move Sunday. As soon as we somed extra money I am investing in a 5th wheel - I will never be homeless again. ETA I just reread your thread - so you are on the 6 mos fed now? Until the job is guaranteed - don't go. But as soon as he is hired - get there fast. Mountain View Academy
Many 1st interviews are over the phone. Trick for phone interview - look into a mirror when conversing - keeps you much more "alive" and "energtic" with your answers. Many companies are still flying people for interviews or paying for hotels. So don't think you'll be up for all costs. Many companies are giving lump sum moving expenses and you use towards truck, loaders, packers, etc. You can change a Ryder truck reservation 3 times. We saved $400 by watching our rates and calling to change when there was a drop. (I moved from TX to UT in July and spent $4.50/gallon a diesel.......yikes!!!) My dh company did not pay for anything. We have all the receipts and are writing it off on taxes since we moved for his job.

Wow...I feel your pain...This is the exact reason we want to start looking elsewhere...We are on one of the federal extensions, not sure which though...I think we are on the first one going into the second one....In our situation, we have absolutely no family to move in with if we become homeless...While we have friends, they aren't that generous...I'm excited to hear that y'all got jobs though...It gives me a ray of hope in this very difficult situation...
