It's important to me to start off the New Year with a run. My tradition is a local New Year's Day Resolution Run & Dip: Run around a lake once or twice (5.2 miles, in my case) followed by a quick dip in the sub-freezing temperature waters. Given our recent extended weather event and my subsequent lack of exercise, I was SO excited to do this today! Our whole family was goingto participate ~ with the run, anyway. Only two of us were committed to being polar bears.;)

The weather yesterday ~ when I wasn't able to run due to time constraints ~ was in the 40s and dry. Last night a new storm front moved in and it's snowing/sleeting now. Roads are icy and the run may even be cancelled. I have no way of finding out but it doesn't really matter since we can't get down there. Among other things, the milker didn't show up so Hans is working when he wasn't supposed to be.

There's also a race I do every year the first Saturday in January that will likely be cancelled due to icy roads.

Sigh. I'm so sick of this. There's something very uplifting about starting off the New Year by getting outside and moving.

How could you wear capris in 30 degrees???

The other day I managed to get in a run and a couple of miles into it I was down to shorts and short-sleeves ~ with temps in the mid-30s. People were driving by looking at me like I was off my rocker, but once I'm moving, I heat up a *lot*.

Have a good run/walk!:)

I SO understand! I haven't exercised for 2 days and I'm getting so bummed about my leg. I just began walking somewhat normally but have a pronounced limp and months of rehab I'm sure. I just want to get out and run but I have to figure out other exercise and I really don't like it. Jogging didn't feel like imposed exercise and I really enjoyed it. I hate trying to impose exercise but since I'm still not walking I certainly can't run.

I wish I could bring you down here because there are NO weather issues. Well, it did rain last night but that just means more mosquitoes.

You've had such a long hard haul with the weather - I hope you get a break at some point.

:iagree:

This is me too. I tend to be the coldest person in a group. But once I'm running, I warm up. I've figured out what clothes I need at certain temperature ranges. In fact, I bought dh long pants and long sleeve tech wear for Christmas (from the kids) and suggested he wear it today. He was going to wear a short sleeve shirt under the long sleeve shirt, I told him not too, he didn't believe me but in the end gave in. When I got home (he went 3, I went 6), he said I was right on the money with the clothes.

Can you jog with a life jacket or similar in the water? I know in college when the roads were really bad, we'd hit the pool. It wasn't very fun, but it got the job done. That way it's the same motion without any impact. It will work if the impact is the problem.

I'm sorry Colleen. :grouphug::grouphug:

That sounds like a great New Year's tradition. Although I would not be getting in cold water myself! I hope your icy roads clear soon!

Anyone new want to join us?? We're a fun group and there is positive feedback for the effort you put in!

I am committed to doing some form of exercise every day. With my dh's schedule, I have not been able to stick to a running plan. So, on the days I can't run, I have to do something - pilates video, sit-ups/push-ups etc., something to get me back in shape.

3 years ago I won my age group in a 5k and 2 years ago I was second in my age group in a major 4 miler. Now, I can barely make the three miles, since I have not been running. :ack2: I feel so much better when I am fit. I need to get back to that place.

It is supposed to be 35, but with the wind, it was much colder. I went out for 30 minutes (mostly running with some walks throw in - I have a history of stress fractures and need to ease into this gently). Running pants (stretchy variety), short sleeve tech shirt, tech fleece (ditched that by the end), gloves. My hands get and stay cold, so I can be running in shorts and short sleeves and still need my gloves. :001_smile:

I really really want to join you girls! I am finding it extremely difficult to find time to excercise at the moment and boy is my body showing it :(

I did really well 1 1/2 years ago when I could wear baby on my back and push my older child around in the stroller. He was really too old for it but he didn't mind and I could get a great walk in.

But now he is almost 7 and when he walks he goes so slow that I can't get a good pace going.

I have a tread mill but the kids wake when they hear me up and I won't use it with them anywhere around it.

Evenings are rough because I'm usually here alone getting them both to bed then I'm beat.

HELP! I know you all have challenges of your own. How have you managed it? I just need to have some kind of accountability to get me back into a regular schedule!

And a second question - has anyone had a treadmill that just slows almost to a stop as you are running? Mine has started doing this all of a sudden and as you can imagine I'm worried about hurting myself. The treadmill of course is past warranty at this point

Bummer. Is biking out? Biking never feels to me like imposed exercise. Swimming is so great for one's health and not hard on the body, of course. I'm not a good swimming, though, and really only enjoy it as leisure, not working out.

I have to admit Mexico has never been high on my list of places that interest me, and I don't have a desire to live in a warm-weather climate during the winter. Still and all, a warm break does sound nice. My husband would love it. What took you down there, btw?

I've wondered what's been going on with you since you used to run more regularly. It's kinda sad how far back we slide when we slack off, isn't it? Glad you're getting back in the saddle again!

It does. So much of it is mental, for me. I'm turning 40 in a couple of months and I just really want this to be a good year, kwim? I'm comforting myself with the knowledge that I didn't run much during the first two weeks of January '08 yet still exceeded my goal of running 1000 miles during the year. I need to remember that today is after all just one day...

Thanks for the hugs. I guess the roads aren't too bad and apparently the run is going on as scheduled. I need to be here with my younger guys, though, while the older two help Hans in the barn. I think I'd feel better if the run had been cancelled altogether.:tongue_smilie:

I was teasing her, not intending to be rude or anything. I was shivering just thinking about 30 degrees on *my* bare lower legs! I should have put a smiley or something after that remark!

I hope your weather cooperates with you more this month!

Oh, I didn't think you were being rude; sorry if I came across that way. Just talkin'. I'm always surprised at how super hot I get when I run. Like Cheryl, I tend to be cold when I'm "at rest", but when I really run, I shed clothing even in cold temps.

Thanks! Glad you were able to get in a walk/run with your friend ~ and good job taking care of some litter along the way.:)

Yes, I've definitely noticed a real warm-up as I go along. I've found that if I go outside dressed in what I'm going to walk/run in and am comfortable, I need to take off a layer or go w/shorter sleeves or shorter pants. If I'm a little too chilly when I first go out, I'll be comfy after the first half mile. 'Course I usually just check the weather website and go by temp. and wind!

Well, I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and get myself out on the road one way or another, so I did my rehab exercises and then went out on my normal route - hobbling along. It really felt good to simply get out (up until today I couldn't do more than shuffle along, so not even walking) and while I got no cardio and really no muscle benefit, it was great to get out. I turned around before my normal turn around so I think it was more like 2.5 miles than the normal 3. Only took a couple hours (kidding :)). Oh, and when you're moving so slowly after a rain the mozzies are RAVENOUS!

I'd need to get a bike for biking and honestly, I'm really not interested as it just isn't anything like biking in the US - very different - it is transportation and not leisure. I am starting to get used to the horrific salt mouth from swimming but I've been in a long recovery from a shoulder injury and swimming has been aggravating it. Maybe I'll pool jog though - I feel weird doing it because it looks so hokey. :)

We hosted twenty teens for a New Year's Eve all-nighter last night.

Considering that I've had only two hours of sleep and a twenty minute nap in the last 36 hours, I proclaim our stroll around the block to be a decent start toward the exercise goals this year. (Not a great one, but....)

Tomorrow is another day. Keep on moving, moving, moving....

Can I come in?:)

I'm recommitting myself to really exercising regularly this year. (I'll be 40 in a few months, too, Colleen. ;))

Night time is my most productive as far as exercise. I have been having some trouble with my joints lately so I'm trying to go easy so I don't get discouraged. I'm not a runner so I hope I still fit in?

Tonight I'm going to do two miles of a Leslie Sansone (Walk/Jog) and 20 minutes of Turbo Jam with 10 minutes of ab work.

I'm committed to at least 30 minutes 5 days a week. It's a challenge being an evening exerciser because I have committments on some nights. I'm going to make it work, though.

Here's to being fit!
