Jann in TX Posted July 30 Posted July 30 (edited) This is a spin-off of the K-Drama thread. Lets keep it fun! I'm " Atiny, Black Rose who tries to Stay" Bias: Mingi Bias Wrecker: Wooyoung (this means I like Ateez, The Rose and Stray Kids)... I listen to a few other groups too. It all started when my youngest dd was in high school around 2014 when she was invited to a Seventeen concert (VIP!!!) and turned it down because she had never heard of them... 2 weeks later she LEARNED and has been an avid fan ever since. At college she was a founding member/officer of a K-pop dance club (doing cover dances)-- it is the largest non-academic club on her campus (Colorado State University). My K-pop journey began when dd began driving-- our rule is that driver picks the music. We've actually had several long (multi-day) road trips together since her university is out of state... I guess you can say we bonded over K-pop! I was at the Ateez concert in Arlington, TX this past Sunday-- AWESOME!! I saw The Rose (also AWESOME) in Austin, TX in December-- 3 days after heart surgery! If you ask my 4yr old grandson who the best singer in the world is he will not hesitate and say "Jongho" ( I think I may have influenced his opinion a little)... Edited July 31 by Jann in TX 4 Quote

livetoread Posted July 31 Posted July 31 I honestly don't listen to the music all that much, but I'm fascinated by the culture and drama of K-pop, mostly boy bands, and I probably know the most about Stray Kids. Can't really claim a bias. I like the dancing, and I can't even say how many times I've watched Taemin dance to Move. It's mesmerizing. 1 Quote
chocolate-chip chooky Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Me! Just bought tickets for Stray Kids in Sydney in October. My middle daughter and I will be roadtripping from Brisbane 😊 I love the theatrical elements of kpop. It's not just music. It's singing, dancing, acting, comedy, costumes, makeup, hair, sets, props, storylines/lore. We don't get many kpop groups touring here in Australia, and next to nothing in our city, Brisbane. I've been fortunate enough to attend an SBS Christmas Eve Gayo in Seoul, and I've stumbled across outdoor fan meetings in Seoul. My best kpop moments: - Stray Kids in Sydney in 2023 - BTS 10yr anniversary Festa in Seoul in 2023 - finding myself in a dance studio lobby with a kpop boy group - sharing these experiences with my daughters 😊 3 Quote
chocolate-chip chooky Posted July 31 Posted July 31 In answer to a question from another thread about getting Stray Kids tickets - The Australian ticketing system is quite different to the US, as far as I can understand. We don't have dynamic pricing, and there are ticket buying limits. And there are laws around reselling tickets. We had three people all poised and ready, and we got decent but not fabulous tickets. It seemed like we were put randomly into a virtual queue. The first of us to get 'in' was around 30,000 in the queue, despite clicking the pre-sale link at the exact right time. But then I was put at 7000 when I got in a couple of seconds later. We don't understand the system. From our previous experiences, it seems that different devices or browsers make a difference. I once had a whole extra verification step that the others didn't, even though we were all in the same place doing the same thing for the same tickets. @Vintage81 good luck getting your tickets! 1 1 Quote
SKL Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Before I was a BTS fan, in 2019, my kids begged me to take them to a driveable BTS concert. I said no because it was on the same day as their school's only annual track meet. In 2020 I got to know BTS and vowed to go to the next concert we could get to ... but because of Covid and military conscription, they won't have another concert until at least 2025. And now my kids aren't that into BTS any more ... so unless I go alone, I guess I'll never see a BTS concert. 😞 We've been to see Stray Kids and Eric Nam. Occasionally lesser known groups perform locally ... we have one coming up this fall that I will try to attend. 2 Quote
Vintage81 Posted July 31 Posted July 31 First, I have to thank the k-drama thread for getting me into k-pop because that's how it started. My younger DD14 and I were watching k-dramas together, many recommended on that thread, and then DD14 checked out k-pop. She immediately loved it, sent me a playlist, and now that's pretty much what we both listen to exclusively. Before the beginning of this year, I knew of (and liked) BTS because of their American crossover stuff, but I knew nothing about the rest of their music. I have listened to quite a bit of their stuff, but not everything. Jungkook's solo album is my favorite right now. Of everything I've listened to so far, Stray Kids are my favorite overall artist. I've been working my way through their extensive discography and I just love everything. If I had to pick a bias, it would be Bang Chan, but I'm really OT8...I love them all! Thanks for the luck @chocolate-chip chooky...we're going to need it, I think. It would be a dream to see them in concert. We also listen to lots of other artists...P1Harmony, XG, Aespa, Enhypen, Seventeen, New Jeans, B.I, Chung Ha, The Boyz, Le Sserafim, TxT, G-Idle, Xikers, Ateez, and more! We just saw Ateez in concert in Arlington and they were amazing!! So sad I didn't get to meetup with @Jann in TX there, but it was so crazy! 3 Quote
SKL Posted July 31 Posted July 31 I haven't taken the time to really get to know more than BTS. We went to Stray Kids in Chicago in 2022, which was huge for my girls and their 2 friends, but honestly, I didn't love it. I think SK has improved over the years. I hear NewJeans is great. I just don't have the time to be a serious fan of more than one group. My kids were all about BTS in middle school. One of my kids is an all-or-nothing type. After a couple years of BTS is everything, she switched to Stray Kids and ditched BTS. 😛 Next she started focusing on Latino music. My other kid has broader interests and still enjoys a lot of different K-Pop acts, Latino acts, and others. I just love music of all kinds. During the 2020 shutdown, I had time to research a lot about various artists, and I'd love to do more. Maybe when I retire. As far as specific albums, I don't think I have a favorite, but I really like many of Kim Taehyung's slower songs. I hope he keeps making them. I think my favorite BTS song is Fire - so lively. And I love watching all of them dance. 2 Quote

Not for all songs, but like title tracks off of their albums, groups will put out so much stuff...an official m/v, a performance video, a dance practice (sometimes multiple ones), behind the scenes of making the m/v, not to mention all of the youtube shorts/tiktoks they make for dance challenges, and intro/teaser videos. Enhypen just had a comeback and they had this intro video that was like a short movie and the quality was top notch. It's just crazy to me. 1 Quote

Then there are the vacation stories Bon Voyage and In the Soop and upcoming Are You Sure. And documentaries like Break the Silence and Burn the Stage. It's a great way to keep the fans interested in between concerts and new releases. They also collaborate with a broad variety of other artists, which is nice to see. livetoread Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Yes, it's the content I find way more interesting than the music itself. I am fascinated by the whole parasocial thing and how much time and effort the idols have to put into keeping their fans into them. I don't think we have much of a parallel in US pop. There are avid fans, sure, but the stars themselves aren't expected to allow the kind of access or provide the kind of content that Kpop idols are expected to provide. I was watching a fan meet (Stray Kids) and the fans brought beautifully made headpieces. When the fan was sitting before each idol, the idol put them on and then the fans took pictures. Could the idols have refused? Maybe they didn't want to wear some sparkly unicorn thing on their head. I don't know. It seems the idols don't have a lot of autonomy, and while it's fun to think they love wearing sparkly unicorn headpieces for their fans, if that's their brand, then by golly they are wearing them because that's what the fans expect. 1 Quote

Instead, they offered fans their first BangBangCon (Bangtan Room Concert). It was two days of 12hr (24hr total!) of concert footage, MVs, variety content etc. I decided to join in with my daughters and watch a bit. Well, I watched the WHOLE THING. 24 hours of BTS in two days. It is a precious memory, because the fun we had was immense, and my girls embraced me embracing it. And it was wholesome joy much much much needed in early 2020. I love a heap of kpop groups, but BTS are so special. BTS 10yr anniversary Festa was an incredible thing to witness in person. We went to the fireworks and party on the island in the middle of the Han River, along with about 500,000 other people (not exaggerating- that was the official estimate). We were surrounded by people of all ages, all races, all genders, all everything. At the rave, there were families all dancing with their army bombs. There was an elderly couple right near us, dancing their adorable hearts out. A group of teen boys were in front of us. It was truly incredible to see the reach of BTS and the pure joy of the crowd. 1 Quote

I loved the dancing and was quickly disabused of the idea that the music is innocent (I looked up what champagne confetti meant and laughed at "You got me drinking that potion!") That led to dance challenges of his music which led to Taemin dancing to anything, which led to Hyunjin and Taemin dancing to Guilty, which led to Stray Kids and their content. Tell me how to find out in advance? A lot of things we've truly just stumbled upon. One time last trip, we were in DMC for something mundane, and we saw a temporary stage being built. We had a stickybeak, and found out it was for a Zerobaseone fan meeting. So then we knew to look that up to find out the time of it. It was outdoor and free. Another time, we were in DMC for something, and we saw Ateez fans queuing in an outdoor area. So we hung around to the side and saw an Ateez fan meeting. For the olympian concert last night, that was also luck. I saw something on Twitter about XH, so we looked it up. We only knew about it a day in advance. If you are interested in paid concerts, it's harder, because so many are fanclub only and then it's only one ticket per sale. We've only ever paid for one kpop show and that was the SBS Christmas Eve Gayo in 2022. We booked it months in advance through a touristy site. It was very pricey (about $300AU) for a 3hr show, but all the big name groups were there. We were glad we did it, but once was enough. Quote
chocolate-chip chooky Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Just to clarify - we've only paid for one kpop show in Korea. We've paid for Stray Kids in Australia twice now. Quote
