Saturday night at 11 pm I was chilling out to a Kdrama and my dd was doing laundry.  She went to move stuff in washing machine over to dryer and smelled a funny smell as she approached the laundry room... when she opened the door the room was filled with smoke and a strong electrical-fire smell  ...  DD unplugged washer and pulled it out a bit (no visible flames)  then grabbed her phone.  The dryer was not in use and had not been used for a few days.

She called 911 and grabbed grandson-- I put the dogs in back and we went next door

First responder was here in less than 1 minute (police).  No less than EIGHT firetrucks and ambulance a few fire marshal trucks and who knows how many other police cars arrived in less than 3 minutes (first fire truck was right at 2 minutes).   I think it was a SLOW night in town...

Anyways-- after about 45 minutes of checking everything it was determined that fire was contained to washing machine.  Fire put itself out just as they were getting ready to take washer apart...

So thankfully no structural damage.

New washer (not a Speed Queen) gets here by Friday.

How old was it?

6 yrs old.  We had it 'worked over' less than 6 months ago.  I did tons of laundry last week with no issues-- totally loved the machine until the fire!

🥺 This is so upsetting! I’d call and let them know. Is there any formal place to log this? If it turns into a recall situation they could owe you a machine. I’ve had mine for 12 years now and I’d STILL be mad if it broke. I’d be absolutely outraged if it burst into flames.

Oh my goodness! So glad you are ok. How scary.

I hope SQ will be responsive about the issue, and get to the root of the problem—it seems like they should be compensating you for something, especially if they just worked on it 6 mos ago! I don’t know what “worked over” means, but it certainly seems like they should stand by their work.

That is really scary!! Glad your dd was nearby and smelled the smoke!

The whole neighbourhood got a dramatic show, it seems. Firetrucks AND ambulance? Perhaps they thought that there could be CO poisoning or smoke issues? Did they check anyone for high CO or CO2 levels?

Yikes.   I think I would want to contact whomever did the "working over" -- I assume that means repair?  I'd wonder if that might have contributed.

My very old Maytag went up in literal smoke and small fire in the fall.  The problem was moisture in the motor, which dripped from a rusted connection where the bleach dispenser (which we'd never even used) attaches to the tub.

I can’t remember how long I have had mine. I would love to know your model number.
