Oldest dd is getting married in January.  DD’s dress is ivory chiffon, not very bling-y or full skirted.  Bridesmaids dresses are plum chiffon.  Groom really wanted navy suits, so they, along with dh and ds and groom’s dad, will be wearing navy with plum ties.  Little dd is the flower girl, so she is also wearing ivory.  Groom’s mom found a navy dress, below the knee length.  Dd really doesn’t care what I wear as long as I don’t match her or bridesmaids.

I’ve been looking a while and can’t decide.  What colors even go well with the wedding colors?   I don’t want to spend a lot on my dress or have to pay for alterations.  I would like to stay under $100.  I’m kinda short, so anything full length is probably out.  Tea length would probably be best, but I’m flexible on length.  I want something more modest, so no showing cleavage or back.  Must have sleeves, but I’m flexible on length.  No jacket dresses.  I really don’t like those.

Give me all your suggestions.  I need some direction on this.

I wonder about a floral with either plum or navy notes?

You could also go with navy like the groom's mom. At my son's wedding, by complete random chance both bride's mom and I both wore navy, and there were four family members who all had the exact same shimmery fabric (different dress design, same fabric). All random chance. We took photos and enjoyed the vibe.

Dh and I have worn the same clothes to all 3 of our kids' weddings.
My navy dress (with crew neck & short sleeves) has easily fit in with all 3 different color schemes.
Both my son's MIL and I wore navy, but the dresses were so different that it was a non-issue.

As parents, we were only in the Family photos, not with all the bridesmaids, etc.
I prefer wearing more neutral colors regardless.
(My dh wears a dark gray suit, even tho the groomsmen wore navy or khaki.)

YMMV!  But it's wonderful to get feedback from the Hive on things like this!

Interesting.  I thought if I wore navy I would just blend in with the guys too much for pictures.

What size are you? And do you know your color season?

I wear around a 14 for most things because I’ve gained wait around the middle in the last few years.  However when I tried on some dresses from Alex Evenings, I fit best in a 10.

To be clear, I wasn’t purposely choosing Navy, it’s just that’s what’s in stock right now. In another month or two there will probably be a lot more options, but at higher prices.

What colours do you enjoy wearing and look good on you? You could go a brighter blue than navy, or lilac.

I personally have no idea what my mom wore at my wedding. There were far too many other things to think about. I'm sure whatever you decide you like will be fine.

I don’t think the mother of the bride needs to match the wedding party. As long as you wear colors that are compatible the pictures will looks good. Actually let me ask my sister, she’s a wedding photographer and a very good one! I’ll get back to you. 🙂

However if it were me, I would look for something in a color and style that suited me and just make sure that it didn’t clash with the wedding colors. It’s hard enough to find a nice dress that looks good on me. I wouldn’t limit myself to one or two colors.

What about blush-colored? That seems like it would go well with plum, navy, and ivory without actually “matching” anyone. Something like this maybe? If that’s not a color you like, I think this would look nice, too.

For dd's wedding, the mother of the groom and I both ended up wearing navy, although very, very different dresses. Wedding party was in peachy and coral colors (all the girls chose their own dresses, but one picked a plum color -- dd really didn't care, so it was all good.)

If you like navy, it's a classic color that can be worn again, provided you pick a style you'd wear other places.

ETA:  1) When I was looking for a dress, I found out that good department stores have far greater selection online than in their store. Once I had tried on what I thought I'd like and knew the sizing for several brands, I ordered a number of dresses online, had them delivered to my house, and then returned everything I didn't choose to the store.  2) I also found that many times the Alex Evenings and similar brands of dresses are listed on Ebay at a decent discount.

We just had my dd's wedding. My extended family picture was so beautiful becasue we all wore colors that went together so well. DD's bridesmaids wore light blue - 2nd dd and niece, my mom and I wore navy, my sister and new niece (by marriage) wore floral prints on a blue background. Men wore suits with navy or light blue ties. I am so thrilled that it turned out that way - it was not planned but for the next one, I will try to plan it.

So my point is that if having good pictures is important to you, purchase a dress that coordinates with your family.

Also - I bought several (10 -15) to try on at home and then return. Nordstorm is a bit pricey, but they have a great return policy. You might find something on sale for under $100. Or buy a dress that is a little over and plan to sell it later.

I also got a stunning picture at the rehersal dinner with my children - again we had not planned out outfits to coordinate but they didm(I can post this picture since it was taken by my father-in-law): Linda.thumb.jpeg.7023c0279261db35d683b313970baaa1.jpeg
